Tools....

Acquired many tools over the years with the exception of a CNC and water jet (still wishing) and recently decided to STOP loaning. I try to be a good neighbor and help folks but, no more...
They will not return as in loaned condition???, I really don't understand??.
In the past when I borrowed tools, I always returned them in original condition and If I broke a borrowed one, I would buy a new one...

I gotta start keeping better company.........

I stopped loaning any of my tools years ago. Most were never returned and some that were I had to go get and they were broken or messed up so bad I had to buy new ones. Now when anyone asks me if they can borrow some, I just tell them that I got mine at Sears or wherever and they can do the same.

Same goes for a trailer and more so if it's a car hauling trailer..........Wal Mart could not keep enough tail lights in stock for me, my trailer always came back with both tail lights broken and sometimes completely missing........Once the toungue jack was bent back at a 45 degree angle, I asked the guy what happened to it, he told that's how it was when he got it from my house!!!!!!!!!!!

Then there was the time my trailer came back without the winch on the front, the guy says he has no clue what happened to it and refused to pay for it, thanks a lot, scratch another "friend" off my christmas card list...................

Then there was the time I loaned my trailer to a "good friend" and he 2 weeks later loaned it to a guy down the street he barely knew, the trailer ended up 300 miles away and it only took 3 months for me to get it back............

Now it has a nice big lock on the hitch and my wife knows the 4 people that are allowed to borrow it, oddly enough, they borrow it maybe once every 5 years at most.................

I used to loan tools to "FRIENDS ONLY". Needless to say I have a few less friends now and that's fine with me. I was lucky and nothing ever came back broken. But a person should not have to go get his tools back when he needs them himself. And then for them to say "I never borrowed that. It must have been someone else".

If I loan tools, $, whatever to someone and end up thanking them for
return or repayment, not them thanking me - they have made their last loan
or borrow from me. Life is too short for that lack of consideration.
In one sense, sadly, I don't loan stuff much anymore.

I don't think they mean to be stupid, or inconsiderate! The problem is they don't stop to think. Over the last 30 years I have gotten into many heated exchanges of words, because I refuse to loan tools.

When a friend wants to borrow tools. I tell them to meet me at the shop. I then help them out. I get to keep my tools, and what small number of friends I choose to keep.

I did adjust my loan policy, they can use my tools as long as it's in my drive way.

I belong to a car club with about 50 members, and there are 28 cars inside our garage. Everybody seems to want to borrow some tool. I just tell them to give me a tool of theirs to keep, and when I get my tool back in good condition, they get their tool back. Always get strange looks, but I always get my tools back.

Try it with your neighbors & friends. It works!

What a great idea, never thought of that, like a deposit.......half the time I forget who I loaned the tool to, so I can't even call them for it, cause I'm not sure who has it.......

See if you can beat this, I loaned my dad a piece of heavy equipment and told him he would have to insure it while it was in his possession as my insurance company would not.

While he was running the machine it caught fire and became totaled. The insurance company paid him several large to cover the loss and my dad kept the money. He told me it was his money because he bought the insurance.

I don't loan out as much as a screwdriver to him or anyone else since then.

I Know what you mean. It has been so long since someone has asked to borrow ( I do not lend ), I am not sure I have lost anything lately.

I loanded my trailor to a contractor friend once, he brought it back with a flat tire. Then a farmer friend of mine needed it, he fixed the tire and cleaned up the mess the contractor left and I got it back better than before!

Contractors: Zero
Farmers: Big score.

Ditto on no loaning to friends, but my family have always returned tools in the same condition they left. It helps that both my brothers and my dad aren't so much gear heads, but guys that have a love for things mechanical.

Scott,

That's a real bummer - you should tell him you'll pay for his insurance cost,
then he can do what's right and pay you the insurance payoff.
At least you could recoup some of your loss and leave him no excuse.
My guess: you aren't talking to him anyway and/or he spent the money
already.

Scott.... Unimaginable.
I think the real problem is that joe blow has NO IDEA what a car guy spends on tools! I got rather upset at a neighbor who 'lost' one of my SnapOn wrenches but it worked out..he ran down a truck and bought a replacement and had an eye opening experience!
I got more twisted when I loaned the use of my lathe or mill (a discontinued practice) and it was left filthy with shavings for me to clean up!
