Mexico's frustration with U.S. immigration policy builds

Government, advocates are calling for measures to influence U.S. public opinion.

By Jeremy Schwartz

MEXICO CITY BUREAU

Saturday, November 17, 2007

MEXICO CITY — Anger in Mexico is growing in the wake of a number of new state laws in the United States considered by critics to be anti-Mexican, a shift probably reflected in President Felipe Calderón's verbal lashing this week of U.S. presidential candidates.

In tougher rhetoric toward U.S. immigration policies, Calderón scolded presidential candidates for using migrants as thematic hostages and announced a media campaign aimed at influencing American public opinion.

Calderón's comments represented a dramatic departure from the statements of past leaders and were welcomed by many in Mexico.

"I think the current American government has gone too far against illegal Mexicans," said Fernando Garcia, a 36-year-old Mexico City administrator. "I don't like the raids and how they destroy families (and) ... the hate they are generating against Mexicans."

Such sentiment contrasts with the cooler reaction much that Mexico gave to the millions of immigrants who took to the streets of Washington, Los Angeles, Austin and other cities in the spring and summer of 2006 to demand an overhaul of immigration laws.

The seeming indifference and lack of supporting protests in Mexico irritated many advocates of immigrant rights.

But since then, immigration reforms on Capitol Hill have stalled, while a series of stiff state laws were enacted and the U.S. government started building a wall along the border.

Supporters in the United States say such laws are designed to curb illegal immigration. But many in Mexico see them as discriminatory, while failing to address the larger issue of immigration policy.

Hmmmmm........So, the Mexican government is frustrated with our handling of illegal immigration.

Let's think about this - they are illegal - how far is too far - is sending them back too far? What a load of codswallop. I’m going to need a bigger wheelbarrow, if the Mexican government doesn't just shut up.

exactly. The existing punishments/laws were not detering them, so new stronger ones were put in place.

Basically, the illegals demanded reform, and they got it. As the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. They wanted reform and this is how the cities/state/federal government reacted. One of those things that if they had not demanded the reform, it probably would have faded away as a politicians nonsense, but by publicly demonstrating and telling Americans that "You cannot survive without us", then all they did was make the public push the governments harder than they ever pushed before and the push was stronger than the illegals. Insulting Americans to try to get what you want doesn't really have a good track record through out the last 241 years. You would think someone would catch on to that.

Too bad a bunch of these illegals don't stay in Mexico and try as hard to make
their own country a better place than to come to ours and bring it down to
their standards at our expense. We need to quit the free ride they enjoy.

Wonder how Mexico would treat a huge amount of Illegals that came into their country and demanded welfare and health care? I don't care how much oil they have, it is time our Govt. has the nerve to tell that jerk who is president of Mexico to go to he**, he doesn't run this country. Take them back down there and dump them in one of his Palaces.

Exactly. The Mexican government should try to keep their own people and pull it out of third world status.

I'm not so sure they are in a 'third world status'........

Here's the deal - it's the Mexican upper class that is upset. The Mexican upper class is upset for two reasons, and neither has anything to do with their members losing jobs as maids or brick layers.

The first is that "kick the Gringo" plays well in domestic Mexican politics.

The second is that illegal immigration is the safety valve that keeps pressure for reform from building up, and threatening the Mexican upper class. Millions of peasants and lower middle class Mexicans come to this country because the worst jobs and housing we have is far, far, better than anything they can get in Mexico.

Put all, or even 1/2, of those people back in Mexico, and they will want jobs, housing and opportunity like they had in the US. Mexico cannot provide that sort of opportunity, unless it reforms its economy and government to allow Mexicans the opportunity to open businesses and succeed based on how good a business person they are, as opposed to success being predicated on being plugged into the corrupt, cronyism driven system they have now.

Mexico would benefit from reform, but the Mexican upper class might not. If the business that makes you rich succeeds because you are protected by the government from competition, you are threatened by freedom and free competition. You might agree to reform, if the alternative is revolution brought on the extreme poverty caused by your small, corrupt economy. The Mexican upper class has not had to face that dilemma, because it could export enough of its surplus population to the US. If that ends, they are looking at reform or revolution.

Just thinking that Mexico is maintaining 'classes' of people is truly appalling.

Actually, it's all about greed in Mexico, greed is incorporated naturally within the elite class in Mexico, they have the money, they have the power. It's losing their money and power that they fear the most - they fear the little people and those little people number in the millions with 12 million living somewhere under the freeway, etc in the USA - so, those living here are not feared, unless they return or are returned by us - and we, not the government need to make sure that that happens - actually, it would assist Mexico to get their act on the right path - it's just sickening what they are doing to poor people in Mexico - they are actually encouraging them to leave the country - it's borders on a crime against humanity.

Keep in mind.....

Mexico has more "Forbes" billionaires, 11, than all but eight other nations. It has more billionaires than Saudi Arabia, Switzerland or Taiwan. It also has more than 85,000 millionaires. According to a CNN report, Mexico sits on oil reserves worth about $400 billion, but Mexico's state-owned oil company, Pemex, doesn't have the investment funds to tap those reserves, and Mexico's Congress refuses to allow foreign investment in Pemex. However, some observers say this is due to Mexican gov't corruption, and the obsession to line their own pockets.

Adding insult to injury American taxpayers are subsidizing foreign aid transfers to Mexico. According to Visa International--which is now clamoring for a share of the transfer fees--American money sent South of the Border by illegals constitutes $50 BILLION this year alone constituting Mexico's second largest most profitable industry.

God knows where this money is derived: government fraud, welfare fraud, IRS fraud, drug deals, ID theft, etc.
