Exclamation MA Resdients Voice Disapproval for Bill to Emissions Test Classic Vehicles

This came over my SEMA radar. MA is looking to introduce emission checks on classic vehicles. Please take 5 minutes to follow the link and voice your opposition via email. Here is the link:

SEMA Action Network (SAN) AA2017MA2

There is a link there to Contact Lawmakers. You just click that and it will email all the lawmakers at once. In the email just include a quick intro about yourself, where you live, and then say you are opposed to H.B. 1805 for the following reasons:

H.B. 1805 creates a new definition of “antique motor vehicle” for those over 25 years old that are substantially maintained in original or restored condition and intended to be operated upon any highway or public way. Under current Massachusetts law, an “antique motor car” is any motor vehicle over 25 years old which is maintained solely for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades and other functions of public interest.

H.B. 1805 requires that antique motor vehicles 25 years old and older undergo annual emissions inspections to ensure that they meet emissions standards in effect at the time of manufacture. Massachusetts already exempts all vehicles manufactured before 2003 from emissions tests.

H.B. 1805 allows the state to adopt additional standards to ensure that other parts or components of the antique motor vehicle are in good working order and that the antique motor vehicle is safe to operate. Current Massachusetts law already requires that all registered vehicles receive an annual safety inspection.

That bill makes no sense at all. Emissions testing for cars in Massachusetts is limited to cars 15 years or younger, so no antique vehicles (25 years or older) are covered by emissions testing. Mass. got rid of the tailpiper sniffers long ago and only tests now with OBDII plug-ins. How are they going to test even antique vehicles without a roller and sniffer set-up they used to use? And it only appears to apply to cars registered as antiques, not as vehicles over 25 years that are registered for regular use. I really don't get what "harm" they are trying to address. Herehttps://legiscan.com/MA/text/H1805/2017's the text:

All well and good.....but we don't have antique vehicles. Some people 'mislead' and register as an antique so that they can take advantage of cheaper registration or less strict inspections. can't have it both ways. Now they want to pass a bill for cleaner and safer vehicles and you are against it.
you makes no sense to me.

The point of the OP was to alert us MA residents to some new BS our legislators are trying to cram down on us. Many of us have vehicles, other than our Cobras, that are antiques. And by the way, any replica Cobra built prior to 1993 is now an antique! You can't make our antiques "cleaner and safer" - we have no emission regulations currently for them, MA has no ability to measure tailpipe emissions, and we already have mandatory safety inspections. The bill is totally misguided.

I am completely comfortable with the concept that I make no sense to you.

Massachusetts being Massachusetts. Most likely to get passed. We do have a former guy here that was trying to reg his CSX4000 car. AFTER he paid sales tax they wanted him to pass 2007 emissions !! I believe he moved to AZ with it. Mass sucks ! They will fight you all the way . It's rediculus. This is why I went to NH !!! NH registry did my 4000 car in 15 min. Good luck to you guys !

That's my situation. Was a NH inspected and registered car as "2009 Replica" with former owner. I bought it in 2014, registered, titled, paid sales tax and insured as MA car and I cannot get an inspection sticker. Car must be able to pass 2009 OBDII emissions and safety check. NO way around it, I've been up and down the ladder.
