Thanks. Yeah, I figured it was a "who you spoke to thing". I think I can restrain myself for another 31 days. Hell, it's been 2-1/2 years in the making so what's another month?

I was working on it the other night, and fired it up with the garage door shut. I ran it for about 30 seconds to verify the tach was working, then shut if off. Then I heard this REALLY WIERD SOUND. I'm thinking, "What in the WORLD is THAT?!?" I walk around the car and realize the sound is coming from the corner of the garage, behind the dog ramp. Behind the dog ramp is my terrified cat, who had come into the garage to keep me company while I worked on the Cobra. I didn't realize he was in there when I fired up the Cobra. He still thinks my Cobra is evil...

Sadly Consistency and training are not strong points at the CA DMV.

When I went in and (eventually) spoke to a manager, I was able to negotiate a TOP "1" in October as i used the B&L insp and getting it appraised and properly insured with AAA args and other activites and said I wanted to be able to use the car to meet the requirements of SB 100.

so the car is now insured with AAA, and I am following up on the other items.

Keep in mind DMV reads this forum, so we probably should come up with some constructive hints.

As far as the SB100 Permits go, i think this year will be the fastest yet. --supposed economic downturn or no.

I initially received a 90-day TOP with my SB 100 sequence number, then got another 90-day TOP from my local AAA office. But when I went back to AAA for another, they said I shouldn't have received the earlier one and that only DMV can issue TOPS for SPCN vehicles. Then went to DMV and they would only give me a 30-day TOP, which turned out to be all I needed.
Point is, depending on who you get at the AAA office, you might be able to get one there with far less hassle!

The 30 day TOPs seem to be the standard length. I think I got one 60 day TOP, but they gave me as many 30 day TOPs as I requested. I drove from July through January of last year.

Question Sb100

Ok , alot of info but I need a simple clarification: if I purchase a car built in 2008 " out of State" with a " new " 2008 engine ( and block) ( but no smog equipment on it) can I apply for the SB100 by " BODYSTYLE " with a new CA reg date of 2008 and still get the exemption without hassle? I believe the car is currently registered out of State as a 2008 mfg date..

You should be fine. You shouldn't run into a problem if the car is registered correctly/legally in the State where the car is coming from. If you want to try for SB100 this year, you should try to get into the DMV as soon as possible to pay your taxes and fees.

can i register any car with the dmv for a sb100 registration...i have a heavily modified race/track/autocross car that is already registered and is about to become a trailer queen track car...if i could get a sb100 registration i could drive it back and forth from the track without spending an arm and a leg on a truck and trailer...if i go through what you all have been discussing is it possible to convert it to a sb100 car...seems like this year might be a low demand year for that kind of thing

If the car is already registered, then the only requirements would be that it's insured and has the right safety equipment.

You're not required to pay your fees prior to January 2nd, but it's a good strategy.

It's pretty chaotic on SB100 day, so you really want to have your documentation in the DMV's system and your fees paid. Not likely, but any glitches with your paperwork, missing form, etc. could delay the process as they are calling Sacramento to request the sequence numbers.

Ron,

Just responded to your email. If the car has a motor installed and has never been registered, then you'll need to have seperate receipts for the car and motor/trans from two different sellers.

If for some reason you don't get your SB100, you can probably finagle enough TOPs to keep you going. It's hit or miss (depending on who you talk to) regarding the number and length of TOPs that the DMV will issue.

Matt's right. If you need to go the TOP route for 2009, you might want to start the registration process in the spring, so you have a TOP for the prime driving months.

I am in a similar situation. New CSX right at the end of the year. I do not think I will have the paperwork 2 to 3 business days before Jan 2.
So, what you guys are saying, is it might be better to wait to file any paperwork untill spring when you might be driving more?
What if its July and the car has a few hundred miles. Will the process pick that up?
Cops are cool around here and I know I can always say I just got the car from the builder.

If you have all of the documents (MSO and receipts) and you complete all of the DMV forms, you should take a shot at getting your SB100 number.

You can't drive the car without a TOP. My thinking was that since there are number of things to take care of (CHP visit, brake/safety check) once you take delviery of your car, you can finesse enough TOPs to keep you going during the summer and fall.

It's the craziest thing, those CHP visits are hard to get, they get cancelled and pushed out due to business travel, and oh yeah...I needed need to go to the BAR because I'm trying to my engine to pass smog.

Default Sb100

Remember that all the receipts you bring to DMV must be originals-no copies. We lost out one year because of this and returned to the DMV office too late. Are experience with Placerville DMV was fast and efficient. They have 1 clerk assigned for the SB100 applications only. I don't remember her name (maybe Jan), but she is a veteran of registering these cars. The office is small and there were only 6 people along with me. I did arrive the very next business day after the 1st at around 8am. One guy had been there since 4am. Best of luck! If you apply for the Tops too many times, they will only grant you a 1dy pass and it must be justified (ie. smog, inspect, etc.)

The DMV that I went to did not require original receipts for parts and labor, but they did require the original MSO. So this must be hit or miss. I would think the DMV would allow someone to keep their original engine and tranny receipt for warranty purposes.

I also had no trouble scheduling with the CHP or BAR. They had plenty of appointments available where I could schedule them right on top of each other. Another hit or miss proposition depending on the CHP and BAR office that you decide to use.

You could start your paperwork and pay for everything on January 2nd, but i think that's a receipe for disaster. By the time the paperwork is processed and fees are paid, the numbers may have already run out. These DMV employees do not know the process all that well and they will spend lots of time going back and forth all around the office trying to get an answer. All the while the people with the paperwork done already are getting their SB 100 numbers. They make the calls to Sacramento in bunches and if you're still working on paperwork, you're probably not in the first few bunches of numbers being allocated.

Start the paperwork ASAP. Get your # on January 2, 2009 and finish up in 2009. Don't wait. There's always the possibility that the SB100 program could disappear in the future.

Lastly, I went to two different DMV offices on different sides of the SF Bay Area and all three of my TOP's that I asked for were for 90 days. In fact, my last TOP, the third, was for 120 days, which in the end I didn't need the whole period. Don't delay.

Some of the information I'm hearing regarding temporary operating permits is complete wishful thinking. Some may get lucky and others may only get one or two for as little as 30 days, depending where you go. Don't gamble away your SB-100 on wishing and hoping for a slew of temps to cover your ass for 2009.

As Rodknock said earlier, (and I don't even know him), take your paper work and receipts to DMV ASAP, pay the fees, and start the registration process before Jan 2.

Every DMV does things differently as their is no outside training and they each develope "their way" of doing things. Everyone giving opinions in this forum is an expert with the respective DMV's they registered their cars with.

Decide NOW, what DMV you are going to use, go there on Monday or Tuesday and have THEM tell you what is necessary. Everyone above in this forum is correct for the DMVC's they used. I assure you that if you listen to someone who used Santa Clara and go to Folsom, ( you're going to be in deep ****!

One of these days, we should think about about collaborting on a "sticky" thread regarding the SB100 process. The level of service and answers that you get from the different DMV offices will vary, but the process is basically the same.

Here's an updated version of information that I've provided to fellow Cobra Club members regarding the SB 100 DMV forms and the process steps. This is based on my experience and what I've absorbed and learned from others...your mileage vary.

DMV Site:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/spcnsreg.htm

Great guide/resource
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.a...+car+and+sb100

1. Form 343 - Application for Title or Registration
a. Complete Section 1, 2 (write "NONE"), 3 and 4
b. Leave section E, F blank
c. Section G: write something like: "This specially constructed vehicle was built primarily for my private use and is not intended for resale or export."
d. Once the CHP verifies your VIN, you can enter the VIN on the top of the form
e. Make is "SPCNS"
f. In section 3, "Year Model" will probably be the year you bought your car (not 100% certain). Mine says 2007.
g. You don't need to do anything with the 2nd page
h. When the DMV enters the info in their system, the "YR 1ST SOLD" should be 0000.

2. Form Reg 5036 - Statement of Construction
a. Complete section 2, 3, 5, and 6.
b. Have most of the receipts together as back-up. They're really looking for the Car, engine, trans (major $$$ stuff)

3. Form Reg 124 - Application for Asigned Vehicle Identificatin Number Plate
a. CHP will have this muti-part form and will complete it and hand you a couple of copies. One for your records and one for the DMV.

4. You don't need to visit the BAR until you have been issued an SB100 sequence number.

One other thing I would like to add and maybe it's the reason why I got longer TOP's. Not sure. Be polite and kind and treat these hardworking DMV people behind the counter with respect. Say please and thank you. It's a tough job dealing with the public. The people that come into DMV offices with all sorts of problems aren't always nice and I've witnessed this first hand.

Doug, for #3, the DMV gave me this form. The CHP officer asked me for it. Again, who knows. I'm sure every day is different.

Got the Bug (Doug) did a lot of research to provide the step by step instructions and they sound very accurate from what I remember this year.

I somehow got cut off in the earlier thread....I think the site "black balled" me because I didn't spell s*** with asterisks so my thread disappeared on my screen!!!

Anyway as Doug said, the make is SPCNS not Superformance, Factory Five, etc. One of the guys at Folsom wanted Superformance as the "make" and got #433 after redoing his paperwork..........."2008 SPCNS" is probably what it will be, I'm guessing.

Good luck...........also, Rodknock seems to be on the ball as well.
