I agree with Jeff and consider vintage photos of 2323 & 2345 at the start of (or at least during) Targa Florio 64' to be the best reference. Mainly because they were the last two "FIA" cars purpose built by AC (including "dimples" btw-) and hadn't been previously raced.

These are great photos and the information surrounding their development is very useful. I wish someone could build the air ducts in aluminum. That would be the perfect compliment to my car

Air ducts wouldn't be the difficult to produce in aly. Just need a buck, hammer & someone who can weld

Does anyone have some (approximate) measurement results of the mentioned oil scoop opening on CSX2431 cars?
- High of the scoop
- Radius usd

As pictures are often misleading it would help for verification.

Like people have stated in this post, no two cooler scoops were alike, here is the scoop that I put on my FIA Cobra....I also manufacture the oil cooler and oil filter housing adapter to install an oil cooler.

Ok, I have fabricated a scoop from .060 6061 aluminum. Three pieces welded together and riveted to the body. I haven't cut out the opening yet. Wanted to run this past you guys first

After looking at CSX2345 and comparing it to mine, I am unhappy with my result. I moved it forward two inches and it looks much better. However, none of the mounting holes line up and the contour of the body changes causing a huge gap between the flanges and the body. Time for the scrap bin

Your scoop looks good, as Dan C pointed out no two oil cooler scoops were the same. As I had previously mentioned the first two of the purpose built "FIA" roadsters used riveted on scoops.
The rear deck lid dimples and oil cooler scoops were done in SAIs race shop.
The dimples were not the only modification required to fit the suit case in the trunk, there were other parts that needed to be modified as well.

The body shape in that picture of CSX2345 sure looks a lot like my ERA 289 FIA...fenders, flares, doors, hood scoop, snout, oil cooler scoop...

If the ERA 289 FIA wasn't based on CSX2345, which FIA car was it based on?

That's the car. Phil went out to Arizona (I think) to go over what is the only unrestored FIA to get the shape and other details.

Bill D: You are definitely on the right track in the photo, but the scoop begins too far aft. Judging from the other pics, the scoop cutout begins about 3/4 - 1" below the radiator opening (just below where the OE chassis bar would be) and ends before piercing the lower body edge. I am liking this setup--maybe because i am so accustomed to the 427S/C type that anything different (within bounds!) is cool. Keep up the thread so we can see the finished product, please!

I agree that the front lip of the scoop needs to be further forward and closer to the lower radiator inlet lip as you said. I have decided to make another attempt with aluminum. I have a friend who is an expert at welding aluminum. He will be my go-to source on the second attempt. I'll keep everyone informed

After waiting a month for the welder to weld up a second attempt, I finally got my scoop back and installed it today. Much better and more period correct, I believe.





Next, I will fab a shroud for it

Too far down the road to change directions Alf.

After three days of fabricating, re-fabricating, fitting and trimming the oil cooler shroud, I finally completed this frustrating task. The shroud is three pieces-two sides and a top. It now completely encloses the oil cooler.

I added two plates to the oil cooler to which I attached the side panels.



Then I fabricated several brackets that are behind the side panels. The side panels are attached to these brackets and to the added plates on the oil cooler


And finally the top panel


Upon final installation, countersunk flush mount rivets will be used for a clean look

Ive decided the aluminum scoop I made just doesn't look right. So I got out the template cardboard and laid out a new one. This one has a smaller opening and looks closer to the pics I could find. Now it's time to transfer the template to a sheet of aluminum and have a go

that is a good point, several racing cobras in europe don't have any oil-cooler scoop, e.g. cob 6008



i am considering to close my oil-cooler scoop while positioning the oil cooler backwards right under the water cooler ... any doubts?
