I knew you guys would rise to the occasion to help out
First off, thanks to all of you for your input and suggestions ... the colors mentioned are good ones. For me it's down to dark blue ... if I get distracted by Champagne Mist, Silver Mink or some other exotic color ... I'll never get it done!
Let me say also, that Trevor's book ... Cobra - The First 40 Years ... is a great resource.
In review, my 289 car will have no hood scoop, no stripes, but silver fender vents and most likely FIA wheels, with white webs and polished rims.
===============
So in one big reply to all ... again thanks for the help and here are a few follow up questions / comments:
- Trevor ... Looks like COB 5001 is on page 212 / 213 / 257 --- Great color, I can see why you picked it. I'll look for a PPG paint code for BMW Mauritius Blue. Any photos of these cars in direct bright sunlight?
- dcdoug --- Thanks for the photos, very nice color as well, with the PPG number, I should be able to get a sample locally.
- Fastd --- Princess / Viking blue is one of the great colors for an FIA car ... some of the other light silvery colors are cool as well.
- Doug --- You did mention this color (thanks) and wow it is a great one. I might have even seen it on one of our tours, would be great to see it in the sun! Any suggestions as to how to approach Canepa to ask what color it is?
===============
So ... bottom line, I do want a painted car ... but also I do see the simplicity of Rodknock's (and others) choice of bare aluminum ... no color to ponder.
Regards ...
- Tim

Tim,
Five pages so far of what color blue. I'm right there with you because if I do another project down the line, who knows, I may paint it, and this thread is an excellent resource. I would have complicated my own decision with shades of red too.
At any rate, for now, you're validating my original choice. No color, because I come from a long line of vacillators.
BTW, Mando's blue is really nice.

Rodney,
Blue or Red ... oh boy, you will have some homework to do!
However ... there is pondering even with bare aluminum cars too ... I would imagine there is a lot of thought given to brushed or polished ... brushed with polished stripes or polished with brushed stripes ... decisions, decisions!

Tim,
If you're interested in the color that Canepa used, you might want to try contacting Llew Kinst. 831-430-9940 or llew(at)canepa.com. Llew was the guy that gave us the tour of the shop when your buddy from Australia was here.

When do you get to the point where delaying the paint choice delays your car? No pressure Tim, right?

Doug ... no pressure !
I have a bit less than (2) weeks. I talked with the painters on Tuesday and the body work is done, next is gel coat & bake time, then primer & more bake time ... then paint!
If I delay at that time, the car will be covered and put aside then put back in the queue when the next car is done. Don't want to do that ... as that will also tack on even more time on at ERA ! So by this time next week, I need to let them know. I plan to go to a PPG dealer and look at color samples from the suggestions posted here. Nothing like a deadline.

This is mine, Toyota Blue Ribbon Metallic as seen on the 2009 Toyotas. Or, if you have a problem saying Toyota, you can substitute it for Lexus instead.

Xavier ... I have actually looked at a lot of Toyota / Lexus colors and they have some great choices. I also found this Web site ...
http://www.toyotareference.com/
that is an excellent resource for not only Toyota information, but for anyone looking at different paint options. Check it out, who ever put it together has done an excellent job.
I would agree ... for some if asked what color their car is, Lexus IS Indigo Ink Pearl (8P4) for example, does sound a bit more glamours than Toyota Corolla Indigo Ink Pearl (8P4) - but same great color.

Problem solved - chrome paint! (It does exist but don't ask the price :-)
I'll search for that blue in brighter light. I did some tracking shots of one of those 427s on a very bright sunny day but that was in my pre-digital era so it was on (sigh) film.
Tim: if you email me I'll send you an image of an FIA car with very dark blue paintwork and NO stripes. I shot it on a very nasty dark day just before the light went but it still looked seriously fantastic!!!! I need to own that car very badly....

Trevor,
Sent an email ... thanks for looking!
As far as the chrome paint goes ... I'll leave that to RodKnock and the Krikham / Aluminum CSX guys.

CHROME PAINT!
In a sense I got lucky, my Kirkham was built and polished already, before I bought it. Decision made.

Thanks COBRANIP, the white is your everyday Ford 1965 Wimbledon White and the blue is Glassrit paint matched to a 4 year old Jeep Cherokee. Let me know if you want the specific code and I'll track it done. I've had an amazing reaction to the colour and it looks so much better out of the booth.
Regards.

After a lot of research into medium to dark Blues, looking at numerous cars, photos and paint samples ... I settled on (2) colors:
==========
One is a solid Deep Navy Blue color from Chrysler which depending on the light, is almost black and a very nice color. Would look great on a Cobra with white stripes!
Chrysler OEM
Code PY9326
PPG# 103893
Similar in color to PPG 5381 and PPG 5387 both of which are GM Navy Blue, but they are metallic.
==========
The other color is a very close match to the Indigo Blue used by Superformance, a rich blue with a little metal for some contrast. We compared a sample to Lane's SPO ( Thanks Lane! ) and if it's not the exact color, it's pretty darn close.
GM 2001
PPG
4717
Indigo Met
WA9792
==========
So after a lot of back and forth between various colors and solid paint vs metallic paint, I went with the Indigo metallic ... which as it turns out, was my gut feel first choice from the get go. My car will not have any stripes or scoops, so the uninterrupted expanse of Indigo will be just what I am looking for.
I put a lot of thought into this and I needed to go through the process of exploring all of the options. Thanks guys for all of your help.
