Alternator pivot bolt locking nut is a great detail.
Also adding the alternator pulley plate.

Jeff,

Those wheels look great. Are they the natural magnesium color or have they been coated (paint, powder coat, etc.)

Thanks,

Ted

The wheels have the original DOW coating. I can't wait to see the photos of the installed parts that we provided to you! Thanks for taking the time to come and see us in Escondido, next time dinner is on us! John

That's really nice! I rerouted mine earlier this year. Had it going through the belt, as well.

John,

Thanks for the reply. Could you elaborate a little about the DOW coating. If applied to an aluminum wheel would it give the same appearance. What is the process to use this coating.

Thanks

Ted

The DOW process was used as a primer for magnesium primarily in the aircraft industry. When magnesium is exposed to oxygen it causes the magnesium to oxidize or corrode, the DOW process protects the magnesium from this. A lot of people believe that you can paint over magnesium this isn't advisable, the magnesium will start oxidizing between the painted or powder coated surface and the magnesium and this may not be detectable until the surface finish ruptures or cracks exposing the tell tale "worming" effect. I f you have magnesium wheels either get the DOW treated or use a product called "Gibbs" and apply to all of the exposed metal surfaces including the area between the rim inner and outer beads. DOW can not be applied to aluminum wheels, aluminum requires anodizing processes, which vintage wheel manufacturers use today to achieve the magnesium DOW look.

The DOW process is a chemical "pickeling" of the part, the first step is a hot immersion and the second is an immediate cold immersion sealing the chemical in the magnesiums pores.

FYI, we can apply the "GOODYEAR" or other lettering to most any brand of tire, there are examples of some BF Goodrich tires that we did also on the forum.

John,

Thanks for taking the time to explain the DOW coating process. I was aware of the issues with magnesium corrosion/oxidation but knew nothing of the DOW treatment. Very interesting.

Thanks again

Ted

Jeff, your belt looks a little wide for the pulley. Is that a .375" wide belt?

I know Dan's tech drawing of the belt lettering lists the original belt as .375" wide, Gates 8220. If the pulleys are period, they would be set up for that width belt. Not wanting to pick nits of course, you know me! It was just a thought as I stared at your pics!

The length is funny due to original alternator bracket.
Have not been able to find 49.5"-50" version
Am I searching in the wrong place?

I think it's supposed to be 48" but haven't tried it real world. Do you think that would be too short?
