Tail light question

Any electrical geniuses in the group? OK so maybe it won't take a geniuses, but I am stumped. I have switched my original two bulb tailights, to single bulb double filaments. Problem is brake lights and signal wires are now connected with pradictable results. When either brakes or signals are lit, all are hot. I should mention that this is on an Aurora, with four way flashers.
Should I be using a relay, (if so is there one recommended?) or diodes? Am I making this more difficult than it should be? Grounds are all secure as far as I can determine.

There are some nice expensive solutions, like the original relay...

But there are trailer adapters that convert from a separate-bulb system to a shared filament system. Some auto parts stores and most trailer rental places (and of course good 'ol JCWhitney) have them.

I would have never thought of that! How did you ever come up with that? I went to U-Haul and sure enough they had a three into two adapter. Have not yet tried it, but sure looks like the fix. I hate to admit how many hours I tried to devise a fix! Thanks again.

Steve: I went through same issue you had in converting my car. Rewired rear and used triler module to adapt the wiring so that it activated single bub. I was never happy with single bulb performing stop/turn/run functions. I then made up new backcans for lamp using electrical boxex that used twin bulbs. I finally realized there is better solution and ripped out the whole set-up and used taillamps from Superformance that uses twin bulbs for each lamp. Simple plug in from your existing harness

I may ultimately do the same. The U-Haul 3/2 connector works, but is less than a clean installation!
