How does a gas pump know when your tank is full?
How does the gas pump at your local filling station know when your tank is full? It always seems to stop at the right time.
I ask this question because I need to redirect my fuel vent and I am thinking of venting it to the filler tube but I don't know if that will cause any problems.
Would you consider our gas caps vented?
Sorry for all the questions and thanks for your help.

I think it's magic. If I even top mine off with one click, it spits out gas when I leave the station.

Ask Al Gore. He invented the gas pump.

From howstuffworks.com
"This mechanism has been around for a long time, so it is safe to say there is not a miniature camera inside the nozzle hooked to a microprocessor. It's purely mechanical -- and ingenious.
Near the tip of the nozzle is a small hole, and a small pipe leads back from the hole into the handle. Suction is applied to this pipe using a venturi. When the tank is not full, air is being drawn through the hole by the vacuum, and the air flows easily. When gasoline in the tank rises high enough to block the hole, a mechanical linkage in the handle senses the change in suction and flips the nozzle off.
Here's a way to think about it -- you've got a small pipe with suction being applied at one end and air flowing through the pipe easily. If you stick the free end of the pipe in a glass of water, much more suction is needed, so a vacuum develops in the middle of the pipe. That vacuum can be used to flip a lever that cuts off the nozzle.
The next time you fill up your tank, look for this hole either on the inside or the outside of the tip. "

Jams,
I think the only way this question can be honestly answered and put in terms that the "average Joe, laymen or (not to cause offense to anyone) simpletons" would understand, would be if Tennessee Tuxedo and his pal Chumley would go and ask Mister Wizard with his three dimensional blackboard! Then and only then will this mind boggling mystery of life be finally solved. Hopefully next we will find out just how those thermos work? Keeps it hot or cold??? How does it know?

With all that being said... If I vent the tank to the top of the filler neck everything should work properly. This is assuming the camera inside the pump nozzle can see the vent?????
I did get a few laughs from you responses but on a serious note are our gas caps considered vented?
Thanks

Actually, the pump senses the available credit on your gas card and shuts off the pump when you hit the limit... not hard to do at $2.30/gal - ugh!

You should be fine. My EM has the vent at the top of the filler neck. Gas goes in just fine.
Myself, I think it's unemployed Santa's helpers who are sitting on the tip of the nozzle. They have cell phones and call the pump operator when your tank is full. There have been alot of layoffs at the north pole since Santa outsourced toy production to China.

They are made by the same company that makes the Thermos, ponder this: you put something Hot in a Thermos , it stays hot; you put something cold in it and it stays cold. How do it know?
Rick
If the tank did not have a return line and no vent it would colapse
as fuel was withdrawn by the pump, seen it happen in the past on production cars fitted with the wrong cap.

Jams,
My vent is in the same place as you are putting yours and I have never had a problem. Of course, I have never been able to afford to fill my tank either. I think it is probably rusty above the 7 inch mark as that is all $15 dollars will put in out here.

The new vent location is in place and it seems to be working fine. Thanks for all of your help.
Now does anyone know how the refrigerator knows when to turn off?
