Default Superformance Side Pipes

Can anyone suggest a way to make the side pipes less restrictive. Is there a way to remove part of the glass pack.
Thanks

I'm curious to hear from other SPF owners that have considered/done the same. I'm sure the answer we'll hear is "Sure! Just take them off and cut them with a carbide cut-off saw. Remove the innards, then weld them back up."

Of course, that will entail a return to the Jet-Hot coating lab. But I'm thinking about going this route as well.

What I'm going to do is this:
1. Take them off
2. Cut them with a cut-off saw
3. Remove the innards
4. Weld them back up
5. Have them coated!!!!!!!!!!!!

LMAO Please post the results if you do it. I'm such a newbie (and dumb $hit), I didn't think they were packed with anything.

You could shorten them. I've seen some with only about 1' or so on the horizontal after coming thru the fender. ??

That was good

Or you could do like we used to years ago, with glass pack mufflers take them off, pour some gasoline in them and throw a match in , and burn them out!

As an aside, my jet-hot coating is junk. It's pitting and bubbling and it looks like hell. I'm considering yanking the pipes off and having a custom set of swappable "shorties" made up.

Here's an idea on how to make them louder without doing the "take them off, cut them with a sawzall, etc......" method.

Drill a series of 1" holes on the bottom of the tube directly behind the 4-into-1 and in front of where the muffler begins. Drill as many holes as possible. Then, take a piece of sheet steel and weld it in the end of the pipe, closing it off. Now, you have re-routed the exhaust gases directly out the pipe before the glasspack.

For a nice tasteful look, you could weld in however many individual 1" pipe turnouts from the holes you've drilled.

It would certainly be unique!

A friend mentioned the Gas Burnout method...
Sounds good to me...
Someone try it and let me know how it worked!

Good Idea Karl!

1. Take them off
2. Cut them with a cut-off saw
3. Remove the innards
4. Weld them back up
5. Have them coated!!!!!!!!!!!!

But here is another thought--run about two or three tanks of 110 octane and you may not need to do all that.

I had just reciently replaced my headers and sidepipes with a set from southwest Performance, what a difference in sound they make, what a cobra should sound like , as for performance I will be getting on a dyno in a few weeks. I have had two SPF cars and my first {#400}was much louder than my second, they may have changed thru the years to be more friendly on the roads. You can buy just the sidepipes if you want, contact Darrell Ratchner.

If your sidepipes are glass packs, they will completely blow out in a short amount of time anyway. Then you'll have to wear ear plugs for every ride or get used to your ears ringing.

Dave, thanks for the link.

I'm going to contact Darrell later today and ask him a few more questions. The header cost is "reasonable", but the sidepipes are a bit too steep for me now. I might end up doing a mix-and-match for starters (his headers only) and modify the factory sidepipes for more "bite".

Default Glass Packs

Tim
I am assuming they are glass packs. The car has 8300 miles on it.
If they were going to blow out (especially the way I drive) they should have blown out by now.
