When I bought my car, the paint had numerous chips due to huge Hoosier tires and a lot of track time. I masked off the spat area and sprayed it with black bed liner from a rattle can. The size and shape of the area was defined by the chips. A couple of coats made it look a lot better. The bed liner also held up well against additional chips and could be touched up with little effort.
I don't recommend this approach for car show guys, but if its already looking bad and you're a driver more than a waxer, give it a try.
