Default stumble under hard braking

This is a Holley HP with the vent whistles. When I mash the brakes the car will die. Is this a float issue or could it be something else?

dlampe -

Look at the carburetor photo on this web site:http://www.4x4rockshop.com/Scripts/p...idproduct=2032

You probably don't have the u-shapred metal tube running across the top fo the carburetor. This prevents fuel from spilling from the vent tube into the carburetor during heavy braking. You likely have the usual vertical tube toward the aft end of your carb. When my engine stalled under heavy braking, I added a short length of rubber hose to the vent tube to make it taller. That solved the problem. Of course you wouldn't want that rubber hose to come loose while driving and go into the engine.

Either your float level is too high or you have a stuck float needle. I would check the needle first. Just my .02

Float level sounds too high IMO.

i agree with the float being too high...on an HP you should run that rubber hose from the front to the back vent...cut a small hole in the top center to allow for venting

All the above are good tips but I solved my similar problem by sealing the carb(s) throat to the hood scoop. (I have vent whistles and proper float levels but no special bowl vent tubing or such.)
As the car slows, the carb eats the engines under-hood heat (at least 200deg F) making the intake charge much less dense.
Make an air pan out of a Moroso kit and only ambient temp air will be pulled into carb. Mine never stalls now.
Good luck,
