Default scissors jack

I have a scissors jack that I have used for a lot of different purposes. I bought this jack in 71 at Sears in LA when I was driving my 56 Bristle back to Iowa. I use it now mostly to raise the Cobra replica enough to get the floor jack under the car.. Well it got twisted and bent. I've looked online but the closest I found is the long thin scissors jack similar to the OEM stuff that comes with the new autos or they start at over 6" tall. The one I had was blue with a large 5 1/2" x 8" base and about 14" long, not light by any measure. Other than garage sales I'm out of ideas where to look . Any ideas?

Have you tried / thought about using a bottle jack instead? I'm sure you can get one of those the size you require?

Most bottle jacks have great mechanical advantage but are too tall and have verry little travel. I start out at about 3 inches when I slip it under the lower "A" arm and that's close. I then raise it up untill I can fit the my hydraulic floor jack under the cross member.

First google hit for "bottle jack" shows one at 2.5" tall. Probably no good but way under 6"

I bought a small floor jack from Sears. On a flat surface I can slide the jack under the front end and jack up the Cobra on the frame. Its designed for low ride height vehicles. And its nice and small. Just right. Why use 2 steps to jack up your Cobra?

I didn't see how high the lift pad starts at. You have to get the lift pad under the car to something substancial like the frame or suspension. Fiberglass doesn't work. I only need to lift about 2 inches to get the floor jack in but then there is no room to move the handle. so generally about six inches lift at the "A" arm ,slide in the floor jack in under the front crossmember, then go up from there . If you're going to lift both ends don't go to far on one end before starting to lift the other.

I know this is expensive, but if anyone knows of this style jack at a lower cost, please advise.

Sean, that is a neat idea and goes really low at an inch and a half. I'd buy one if the price was half that much. Or if I really, really needed it that low.

I keep 4 pieces of 2x12 about 18” long stacked in the corner and just position them in front of the tires to drive up onto then the floor jack will fit under…

Do a search for scissors jacks. I think this has been covered before. I bought a big, American made, army surplus scissors jack for about $20 from some guy on ebay and I seem to recall posting about it here last year. Yeah, it's heavy but it's solid and it has a big footprint and it fits under the Cobra. I went through a lot of cheap flimsy little compact car jacks before I found this one.

If you can't find anything here on CC, PM me or send me an email and I'll send you a photo and try to help you find the ebay seller.

I found a small scissors jack at a salvage yard. Not sure which Ford it came from (or how old) but clearly says Ford on the side and is less than 6"collapsed; however, in the garage I use several 1/2" pieces of plywood stacked (drive on) and a bottle jack.

Default Cherokee jacks...

I don't know for sure how far the factory scissors jack included with Jeep Cherokees collapses, but it's pretty short. Has a good deal of lift as well, since they were built to lift a 4x4. It's what I've always used with our Unique (at least until my wife got me an aluminum floor jack last month!).

I particularly like the long handle that sort of locks into the jack; you can use it to slide the jack around under the car for correct positioning.

They're also readily available at almost any wrecking yard for hardly any money at all.

I have a Larin SJ-1 scissor jack. Got it in Blyth CA in 03. I don’t remember the auto store where I got it. It’s 3 5/8 inches tall. I’ve used it 3 times on the road. Works really well.

Mr. Henry:

Just a suggestion. Perhaps what you need is a floor jack which can fit under the frame rails:

http://www.ac-hydraulic.com/uk/index_ws.htm

The one I have is the DK13HLQ. This has a saddle height of about 3 1/2 inches and will lift 2800 lbs. Worked well on both the ERA and the wife's Miata. I've had it about 5 years now with little complaint. I got mine mail order through a New Jersey company (that's the "little complaint" part) but they are available through several mail order companies. It was a bit pricey; I remember spending about $325 for it, but mine came with a set of jack stands that are capable of holding 6000 lbs each.

Here is an earlier thread on these floor jacks:

That is a new one. I can see how that may work. As useual the car is not together . I'm waiting for engine parts, again. I need to get the rear up to remove a bolt from the rear end cover so I can determine the bolt demensions and start acquiring new SS ARP bolts for the new cover. Rolliing it up on 2" x 12"s in this condition, not under it's own power, is a chore.

I went to the web site and sent several messages. No response. I called the western reps that the essco site directed me to. Another person other than the two shown on the web site directed me to North West Sales Group in Seattle (206-762-5111). They haven't handled AC jack #10466 yet. That would be Feb to March and $525. I'm sorry but for $525 I expect a motor or something.

Glad someone else mentioned this...sometimes the best solutions are the simplest.

MikeH:

I was poking around for something else and found this:

http://www.asedeals.com/Ranger_floor_jacks.html

Scroll down to the Model RFJ2TX. It's similar to the AC jack but not nearly as pricey. I don't know anything about the brand but thought this might be a more palatable alternative for you. These guys also handle AC. Ultimate Garage handles AC also.
