Many, but not all, know that I rebuilt my side oiler because it was such a beast to drive on the street when I first got it. 12.5 to 1 compression, a cam profile that STARTED to make horse power around 3,000 rpm, solid roller cam, full drag race dual carbs (two speeds, GO and STOP).

So the rebuild specs. 9.6 to 1 for pump gas, flat tappet cam in the 2,000 to 6,200 range, smaller vacuum secondary carbs, special order pistons to add quench to the combustion chamber.

OK, back to the drag strip to see what impact the loss of an estimated 100 to 150 horse power would make.

Old motor: 11.90
New "wimp" motor: 11.99

I was like WHAT??? Say,,, WHAT??? That's it? A hundreth of a second is the difference? The power FEELS the same. The mpg doubled! Street manners vastly improved. Running pump gas is cool.

The one thing I didn't change was the tires. Perhaps, the old motor was a 10 second motor with the right tires? I dunno, maybe the same could be said for my present motor? At some point, you ARE limited by available traction. If you can't hook up 500 horse, then 650 horse aint gonna make a big difference (well, until you hit about a 100 mph, that's when the big horse power comes in handy).

But I do what BIG horse power will do! Burn clutches and melt tires, they work great for that.
