this might be a shot in the dark, i know you said that you shipped the engine from the US to Sydney and that it will be cheaper for you to fix it downunder. However, if I were you I would contact the outfit you bought the engine and place a claim for your expenses down there, they might even pay for you to ship the engine back. These companies are not going to tarnish threir names so give it a shot mate.
I have a 427 FE Side oiler and the smoking between shifts was due to bad valve seals. Also try using Valvoline 20-50 VR1 racing oil thjis might help. These engines have large tolerances and thin oils tend to make the smoking.
