Great Asp's Superformance - FE Build

I thought I would start a build thread for anyone interested.

It’s been 4 years since I sold my 2nd Superformance Cobra, and now have ordered another roller from Doug Reed at Reed Performance Motorsports, and I have released Keith Craft to build an FE for it.

I am listing the engine build spec’s, and anticipated goals for HP and TQ. If anyone has questions, that’s why I started the thread.
The roller will again be a Superformance Mark III unit, Royal Blue with White stripes (here are two pic's of my old car, same colors)
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...home1_ab-1.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...ear800x600.jpg

The engine is a Keith Craft motor as follows:

496 CI
Pond Aluminum Block
Eagle4340 cast steel crank, nitrated 4.250 stroke
Keith Craft Stage II heads, 2.25/1.75 11/32 SS valves
10.5: 1 Mahle forged pistons
Scat BBC H-beam connecting rods
Erson Rockers
March Pulley kit
Shelby polished timing chain cover
Edelbrock polished water pump
Professional Products 7.5 BBF FE damper
DynaTek Classic Injection system (polished)
Comp Cams bump stick, around .600 lift, Hyd rollers
MSD Distributor and 6AL ignition
MSD Coil
McLeod Aluminum flywheel
McLeod single disc
McLeod 12” diaphragm on 11.5 pressure plate
Quicktime scatter shield
TKO-600 Tranny, with .82 5th gear
PRO 5.0 shifter
Aviad Road Race oil pan

DynaTek Injection

http://www.dynatekracing.com/fuelinjection.htm

It will make north of 600 hp and tq, keeping under 6000 rpms

As I get pictures from Keith and Michael (KCR Assembly in Plano) I will post engine and assembly pics.

Yeah, it should be a doo-zy. :3DSMILE:

Thanks Brian, it is good to be back. 4 years can be a long time.

Hi Great Asp, looks and sounds beautiful. I'm curious as to why the choice of Dynatek over the competitors? I'm thinking of changing from carb to EFI and TWM seems to be the most popular, but no idea why. I also would love to know, through a PM if you want, what the system cost soup to nuts. Thanks and best wishes for your build.

Why do you use Chinese crank and rods in such a top notch engine?

Oye vey.**)

Obviously an insult to the car owner and to the 1.3 Billion Chinese people.

No insult intended to anyone, just why would you by pass an American made performance parts manufacturer

I wanted the system to look like 48 IDA originals as much as possible. Love the Webers, but the barometric pressure in St. Louis REALLY goes up and down in a single day. I also wanted a no-hassle system. I like the other systems out that are similar, but when I saw this system in MM&FF, I just went :3DSMILE:. The system is "about" $6K.

American parts manufacturer as in whom?

Callies? Carrillo? Crower? You better recheck your list of American parts manufacturers as they are slowly drifting to the oriental side as well. Money is money and if they can have it rough machined overseas, then they will.

There's nothing wrong with Scat/Eagle products.

Actually, Keith Craft makes the decisions on my engine build. I, like you would much rather buy American, and until you asked, I thought Eagle was made in the states. (I thought SCAT was Chi-Com made:o).

But I am not going to go tell a master chef what ingredients to use in my dinner. I did upgrade from an iron crank to the steel, which seemed like a no-brainer. At the end of the day I want the engine builder to be comfortable with the build, as much as I want to be comfortable with the build. These DynaTek systems are new, and I don't want the entire build to be a learning curve.

Here's a few little tidbits of information for the readers:

The Scat/Eagle "cast steel" crankshafts are not "cast steel", they are actually nodular iron.

Also, here's a list of manufacturers who are sending their business overseas:

Eaton Valves : China
King Brgs : Israel
Sealed Power : S. Africa
Mahle Pistons : Mexico/China
Manley Rods : Israel
S.I. Valves : China
Eagle/Scat : China
Ferreas Valves :Argentina
Speed Pro : Brazil
Zoom Clutches : China
Delco Parts : Singapore
Keith Black Pistons: Mexico
Callies : Japan
Professional Products: China
Weiand Intakes : Cast in China, machined in US
JE Pistons : cast in Malaysia, machined in US

That's skimming the surface probably...

Ut-oh

You know, I really forgot to say in my response that I bought a roller made in South Africa. Of course there are American made options for cars, but I really do like Superformance cars. :)

Eric, welcome back to SPFdom ........and, do NOT forget the deer whistles on this one . LOL. Bill

TXWOOD 08-20-2008 07:01 AM

If any of you have heard Carrol Shelby's sales pitch to Bill Cosby at least according to Bill Cosby's comedy routine, Carrol said to Bill when he heard that Bill was driving Ferraris, "Your an American, you should be driving an American car" I guess Carrol considers a British made car with an American V-8, an American car.

I understand a lot of manufacturing is being sent overseas. I do infact purchase Chinese products for the company where I work. The Chinesse are very shrew business people. They have bought much manufacturing from around the world and what was once low cost from China is now moving in the other direction. Many items we now purchase are more expensive now than they were previous when manufactured local because now a foreign company controls production and they have no competition.

Imagine that! The only difference now is that we gave them the machines and technology to take our money to their house.

By the way Eric, Dean Lampe has his Dynatek system being dyno'd and tuned tomorrow in St. Louis, Mo. The Dynotek guys build a beautiful product and Dean claims they are great to work with. I would love to put a Dynotek FI system on my FE 427.
