Default We gotter done!

Many, many thanks to JRoss, fst fox, jshel, damdfw, joe wicked, Bwana Snake, Adam, and MadMiles442 .. great turnout and I really appreciate you guys coming out on a weeknight. Some of you came a long way and stayed a long time ..THANK YOU!

Relatively few issues .. surprise, an FE just barely fits in an ERA .. a car designed for it We really needed JRoss' fancy 4000lb engine tilter. My hoist was too short to go over the nose, so we did it from the side, after removing one wheel .. something I learned from reading ChuckBrandt's build thread.

Here's the crew getting ready to go down ..

It's in there ..

Stabbing in the DKT aluminum toploader ..

Issues: can't get a torque wrench on the engine mount lugs, just got them as tight as we could with a box wrench. And the OEM style alternator bracket bolt actually touches the right shock mount .. must use the ERA provided hardware. Had to cut the OEM off with a recip saw .. we were NOT going to lift the engine to save a damn bolt

Special recognition to MadMiles442 for making the effort and being with us only two weeks after hip replacement surgery! Miles you looked great .. keep getting better every day .. you and Annie will be back in no time!

holy $hit! that looks like abdominal surgery there! wow!
glad it went in relatively smoothly. What did you do about the blanket stuck between the bolt and shock tower?? (from the other thread)

congrats!

SSSam,

Is that a vacuum advance distributor? What's up with that?

I'm also quite jealous, an FE? Ya lucky turd. And a great looking vehicle ta boot. With that much help, I'm surprised ya got anything done.

Steve! That is a vacuum advance .. it came with this gently used engine. Shortly I will replace it with an MSD billet, but right now it is keeping track of #1 TDC for me Of course you don't need FE p*nis envy, you have a 460 BBF, for goodness sake.

Miles, you left your 12 pack of Shiner Bock untouched We're going to try for engine start on Sat, Sun at the latest .. so come back if you can and we'll have it chilled for you.

Patrick, I used that photo just because you were in it

Pulling the dash off now to wire it .. gotta go!

Glad to come out and help. My arm is a little sore from trying to get that motor mount tight, but I had a good time. Got to talk cars for a while and get some good opinions on different kits. I am usually bad with names, but I got most of ya down last night.

John did tell me it was mandatory for me to come out to the next meeting.

I had a great time as well. I would love to be there for the first start. If it looks like a Saturday start up, I would be happy to help.

Default Sunday progress

Joe, we're real close .. if you'd have come by and helped we'd have made it! Seriously, I worked all day on the list in the above message, John Ross put in a good 6-7 hours with me. We killed the clutch slave bracket problem .. re-made the bracket and painted it, looks beautiful and points the actuator rod straight as an arrow. Bled the slave cylinder .. during all this process, John got two brake fluid showers and I got three. I wonder if brake fluid is good for the skin I know it's bad for paint

All that remains is one lower coolant hose, two wires from the MSD box, and headers and side pipes. Then we can crank it. I suppose I ought to put a seat in it, too I'm guessing Wed night. I might also replace the surge tank with a new one ERA is overnighting in. The one I have is too tall for the hood Won't be doing any driving to speak of till I get the MSO from ERA so I can register it. I spoke with Peter this am and it is supposed to ship today also.

I may put the key in the switch tonight and turn it and see what goes pop!

Sam

Tried to convince Jessica that I (we) needed to come help you, but no kitchen pass this weekend, she told me it was her weekend so tough, but she will be willing to come help in the future and learn how to get some grease under her nails. I think the temp had something to do with it, unsure though. But let me know about wednesday I have a kitchen pass all week and weekend but am planning on going to Atlanta Wed though.

Sorry Sammy, I had to keep the mrs happy enough. I gotta keep her pleased so when the time comes to get mine, I won't have to sleep outside with our dog.

I might be able to be talked into another night this week though. Are you looking at Wed to do all that stuff or have it done before then?

Default Wed engine start tentative

Patrick, you drop her off here and I promise to return her a few hours later with grease under her fingernails

Joe, I'm back at my job during the days, so I'm working on the car evenings after about 7 for a couple hours. Tonight is electrical checks, distributor, lower coolant hose and thermostat. Maybe headers. Tues night is headers, sidepipes, maybe turn it over. Install a seat, get it off the jacks. Install the new surge tank that ERA is overnighting. Wed .. if no further snafus stop us, start it up and drive it a little way. So whatever works for you .. John Ross and I will probably be here.

Wed looks like the night for a start up, I'll post a confirmation here on Tues. So, any of you in area the who like to watch train wrecks or drink beer or both .. this Bud's for you! Approx time is 7 pm.

Sam
