The numbers we are looking at are casting numbers, which are like a design revision. There are also casting dates which usually (at least for engines) should be within a month or so earlier than the build date of the car to be "numbers matching".

There also may have been a small aluminum tag under the coil bracket of this motor? There is a production date on the lower left of that tag.

All the date codes are a number, a letter, and a number. You might see 0L13 which is 1970 (0), L = November, 13 = 13th day of the month.

The casting date on the heads will be under the valve covers I believe. The casting date on the block is (I think) right above the casting number near the pan rail?

Probably more than you care to know... but I pulled out a ford shop tips that announced the '70 model cars. You could get a 351 2barrel with an FMX in a '70 mustang.

On the vin tag of the car this combo would have been engine H and trans code X.

I agree with Mr. Sharpe, there is no reason you couldn't run the FMX in your cobra if you want. It's a bit heavier but it should live a long healthy life in a light car like a cobra, even if you wail on it some.
