Rowboy-
MrM is correct. You only need the safety inspection if you don't already have a title. Since you already have a title you can transfer it to NJ and register it as historic vehicle ("QQ" tags) or as a Collector Vehicle (this is the "Limited Usage" registration that MrM was referring to).

Thanks for the guidance. I will probably go for the limited use since insurance, I suspect would be better suited for the occasional long trip.
I have some ideas already, and they all involve warmer weather! All before the end of the summer when they expect regular gas to go over $2/gal, ouch.

QQ registration is only for cars that are 25 years old or older- QQ are historical plates. QQ has no annual dmv inspection at all.
Collector Vehicle can be used for any year car, but you are limited to 3000 miles per year. They only thing that is checked during an inspection on a Collector Vehicle is the odomoeter- they want to make sure it works.

In addition, QQ has no renewal fee, although you do have to renew every 4 years.

No renewal fee? That must be a mistake, how did NJ let something slip by without a fee

QQ plates are NOT legal for replicas in NJ unless your replica is 25 years old.
I know quite a few have QQ registration on Cobras but that is done with creative registration techniques.
Best bet is to register as a collectable.
Cranky
BTW QQ has a one time registration fee, it was $47.50 lifetime.

So just to clerify - If I register my cobra as a "collectable", I will still need to go for state inspection, but all they will check is the odometer ? and held to 3k miles per year ? I assume I will need to state inspection as usual every 1 or 2 years ?

Yes, but to further clarify . . . .
In order to get a title for the car (assuming you are buying a kit and not a completed car that is already titled), the car must first pass the engineering or safety inspection. Once it passes that safety inspection, and they give you your title, then you register it as a Collector Vehicle.
The rest you have correct. Collector Vehicle still gets inspected at your local DMV, but once every 2 years and they only check the odomoeter. You get 3,000 miles per year- or 6000 over the 2 year inspection period.
One other important piece of information- when you go for the inspection at your local DMV to get your Collector Vehicle sticker, you also must have proof of collector or limited use insurance which shows that your insurance company limits the car to 3000 miles a year or less. You can get collector insurance from Hagerty, Grundy or American Collectors and probably some others that I can't remember. Make some calls.
That's about it.

After looking into the NJ-DMV Web site - The "collector" registration we are talking about is "Historic" ???
I do not see anything about "collector".

X-
If the car is already titled before you get it, you can transfer the title and register it as a Collector Vehicle and THE ONLY THING THEY CHECK AT THE INSPECTION IS THE ODOMETER AND LIMITED USE INSURANCE.
If the car is not yet titled and you have to go through the engineering/safety inspection, then the engine has to have all the emissions control equipment installed on it that would be required for the year the engine was made. If it passes the inspection and they give you a title, then you can register it as a collector vehicle and going forward, the inspection is as above.

When registered as a "collector" car not "QQ" - what type of plates are issued from DMV ? I assume they are not regular "QQ" plates ????
