You cannot register a new build cobra as a collector car. That category is not open to cars that have a salvage, or reconstructed vehicle title. All new builds in Jersey are titled as reconstucted vehicles, so you're out of luck on the collector registration.

That rule is relatively new (within the last 3 years or so). It used to be that nearly evey cobra build was registered as a collector car, which allowed you to avoid inspection/emissions. Previous builds with current collector registration are grandfathered, but when those cars or sold, or when new cars are built, they must have standard registrations.

If it was titled in another stated first, you might be able to do it but even that would be a gamble.

In the end it will be more trouble trying to circumvent the system that it will be to follow the rules. As long as you are using a vintage block, it should not be a big deal to get a car on the road that will comply with all the rules. If you want to use a modern engine, or a new crate motor, all bets are off as they will require your car to be emissions tested to the year of the block.

Default uggh!

I am just starting this process on my 1997 built Factory Five I just purchased from P.A. It's titled in P.A. right now & has temp plates on it , but I need to get it registered here. The engine is a 1996 302 ford & I am in a panic that we will have to sell the car now. The only paper work I have is the PA title & bill of sale. Nothing else. Is this even possible to register? We save up 4 years to purchase this car & I researched everything. Except of course these strict laws of NJ.

Since the car is already titled in another state (in this case PA), NJ will accept the title at "face value".

How is the current PA title written?

Year
Make
Model
VIN

No reason to panic, there are simple solutions to any all all potential issues you might run across.
