767Jockey's Contemporary Cobra Is Coming to Texas
In February 2009 our friend (then unknown to me) Doug aka 767Jockey posted this thread about rebuilding a Contemporary Cobra.
As you read through it you'll see Doug had our passion for these cars. But then life decided it had other plans for Doug, as you'll see in this follow-on thread. Doug then did what we all must do, he played the hand he was dealt. Somewhere between mid '09 and early '10 Doug and I struck up a conversation via email that lasted well after he relocated to Houston. I had never met the man, but I was impressed by his resolve. In late 2011, after taking stock of my good fortune, I decided to see if I could rally some Houston Cobra Club members to help things along a bit, trying to organize a plan to get the car to Texas so Doug, now truly a survivor, could finish his dream car and enjoy the feel of it beneath him. I met Doug in person in January at my birthday party and we made a pact that come hell or high water we were gonna go get that car. So tomorrow at 9AM Central I am proud to say that with the gracious help of Bill Swendsen (CC member "mtpockets") and his new F250 towing my race trailer, Bill, Doug and I are northbound to Pentwater, Michigan to meet Ed "DV" Combs, pick up the Contemporary and all the parts many of you have so generously donated, and return them to Texas where they will hopefully become a finished Cobra. We are driving straight through to Pentwater, so if anyone lives along the route and wants to meet us for a Coke, email me and we'll see if we can hook up on one of our pee stops. We're going to take some pics and shoot some video and we'll post some of that up after we return. I know a lot of you have waited patiently to see how this played out, so this is the latest. Hammer down. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7213/7...3b386c22_b.jpg |
Giddy Up
Kick the tires and well, put on a couple pots of coffee. I'm ready, the truck is ready. Pit stop in St. John, IN graciously provided by my sister and her family. Let's go get a cobra.

So you guys are going to spend your Memorial day weekend driving thousands of miles to pick up Dougs car and then help put it together for him. That is incredible. You should be commended. Have a safe trip.
|
Be safe! See ya'll when you get back!!

That'll get all of you grace and good karma.:) If you can, snap a couple of shots along the way and post them here.
|
Awesome!! Keep us posted!!
|
This is really cool!
|
Be sure to get an accurate inventory of all the parts that should be there.
|
Good for you guys!! You should be very proud of your efforts. You exemplify the best of Club Cobra !!!

John,
This is supposed to be an uplifting thread about this project for Doug. If you have an opinion or issue with DV or one of his builds, you might want to PM them instead of making comments here. Just my opinion of course. |
This is a great thing you are doing and I hope that everything is there when you arrive. Believe my I know the frustration of waiting for over 5 years while a person here had my car and just lied to me as he didn't do a thing but destroy what was working on it. It is now in the hands of reliable people who are building it basically from the ground up to straighten out the messes that were cobbled together in the original build. So I wish you all a safe trip and hope the Cobra will be ready for him to finally get to drive it soon.

You guys are great. Doug must be thrilled. I know y'all will check this site along the way, so please post a "payable to name" and a mailing address....I would like to help out with the expenses of this trip.
God's speed and be safe. Russ |

It was supposed to be a neutral post and a fair warning about what to look for. BTW pm's were sent but this was only used as a broader base for info. I wish the guys the best of luck. When Rusty Bob and I rescued Ron61's coupe from another guy in Redding, it was a great day for all. Lot's of fun and lots of stories. John |
So we are on our way, testing to see if I can post pics:
