427 Pond Side Oiler Engine 620HP Keith Craft Racing Cstm Build Stroked 482 C I | eBay

Just some observations but it doesn't look like a Tstat housing has ever been on the intake and the ex ports are perfectly clean. How did this engine run on a dyno and manage to look like that? An aside to that are the spark plug wires, KC did that? Seriously?

FUNFER2 07-08-2016 08:54 AM

Maybe he took the photo's before running on the dyno ?
I agree, the spark plug wires looks awful ! %/

FUNFER2 07-08-2016 08:57 AM

What's your thoughts ?

Anyway, I have been speaking with the owner Dave (great guy) about that motor. It's not exactly what I want, but close and he even came down on price a little.

A engine builder said to replace the rods. (cam and slugs of course)
But, there's more money

Here's some info, pics and a video link. Let me know what you guys think.

EMAIL-

MY EMAL TO HIM-

I've been looking at a lot of different ad's. A friend sent me your updated ad on CC.

That friend has the same year Cobra I do, and he has the tunnel wedge on his 427 side oiler with no hood interference.
So it must be lower than the Edelbrock Air Gap that I had on my 428.
It's a great engine my friend & wish I could buy it. Perfect !.

Kevin

HIS REPLY-

This engine is closer to 500 HP with the roller cam and tunnel wedge intake with the 710 cfm Holley's. I changed the valve covers and spark plug wires to give the engine a "prettier" look.

Here is a link to the engine running on the test stand a couple of months ago: [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEX_wW9ygrA[/ame]

He's a "great guy" because he wants to sell you his engine. Other than that, you don't know him from squat. And didn't you get burned royally the last time you tried to do an internet engine deal? Don't do business with strangers -- again, just lookin' out for you....%/

FUNFER2 07-08-2016 10:08 AM

I would travel to inspect this or any engine.
But, I'm leaning towards a new block & heads like the BBM.

That's the best way to go, if you're not in hurry, of course. In a different thread, the OP said that BBM will have new blocks available in about 60 days.

Uhhh, perhaps he should seek quotes now from our reputable engine builders for turnkey build prices with quotes based on their marginal increase over the costs of the BBM block and heads. If he can't swing those numbers now, he won't be able to do it then with the assumption that the BBM prices will be equal to, or perhaps slightly higher, than what they have been in the past.

Personally, I think the only way he is going to put this deal to bed, with a resulting FE under the hood, is to marshal his pennies and nickels in to one big pile on the floor, count it all up, and then tell blykins what that number is and ask him "can you build me an FE for that number and, if so, what will it have in it?"

I just went back and checked the ebay ad;

"New Keith Craft Racing Built Engine custom built from a brand new aluminum Ponds Motorsports 427 side oiler block. Stroked to 482 c.i.

New, built in 2005. Never run except by Keith Craft during dyno testing. "

So those videos are of the same engine, set up completely different than the pics and that's KC's dyno that it's hooked to? Seriously? If this were April I'd be waiting for the punch line.

It would take a special kind of gullible to get taken in by that BS.

Bernica 07-08-2016 12:38 PM

One of the best engine builders I ever have known personally doesn't have a cell phone and doesn't do internet. You have to find him and try to make friends with him. I used to help him with blown alcohol boat engines and sprint car engines. A well respected builder in those sports, but mean as a snake and now a grumpy old man like a few of us. You piss him off and all your parts end up scattered in his parking lot.
He's not real big on customer service.:LOL:

In the OP, he says he has $10K. That's his budget AFAIK. And based on that, I think he should buy a crate engine based on a 390 FE. He wants an FE and that's the FE he can afford. Forget about the 385, you don't want it.

The alloy 482 is wishful thinking and shouldn't really be discussed, unless this thread is a dream engine thread. And if that's what we're talking about, dreams, then I say get an alloy Cammer from Pond. :)

Correctumundo. If blykins comes back with either "sorry, I can't do it for that price and make you happy," or the OP does not like the results of what $10k can get him in an FE, then the dog is dead and needs to be buried in the backyard as soon as possible.

I don't know if you could build a crate 390 engine for $10K. But there are several builders in this country that, if they can't build a crate 390 for $10,000, then its got to be reasonably close to it. $11K? $12K?

The only other alternative is to buy a used FE and check it out thoroughly, but would you ever know 100% for sure that a used FE was a good engine until you fired it up and ran it?

RodKnock 07-08-2016 01:11 PM

In addition to their blocks and tunnel wedge intake that are becoming available, BBM will also be producing alloy heads that are $1,100, if you order this month, July 2016.

I've just gotta think that the OP can get a good stout FE built with new parts for around $10k! Maybe a little more (gotta have a contingency fund), but unless going extreme it seems like it should work out. I guess folks like Brent could answer that question...

Well 2 years ago, KC advertised a 390/445 FE special for $9,995.
