Hey Batma.....uh, I mean Byron, I looked through your gallery and noticed that your car is called "Project Ludicrous Speed". Which I find hilarious as hell. But I do have one question for you; has that monster supercharged BB made your car go "plaid" yet?

Great car man, Steve

P.S. Almost forgot; does Dark Helmet know that you stole his ride? BaaaaHaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!

I had two cool things happen with my car this past summer. First at a local "Hot Days-Cool Cars" show in a local park my car was picked as the Ladies Favorite Car award winner. The second was at the 2007 WSCB when my car was awarded one of the ten trophies given at the car show on Saturday. They used two combined catigories to select the winners; Well-built cars inside and out with attention to detail, and Very obvious evidence of use, fun, and most impostantly, being driven. I'm sure that the second part of the catigory is the most responsible for my winning as my car is 26 years old and has lots of "patina". The funny part of this story is that they gave the awards in secret at the bash by just leaving the trophies in the cars of the winners with no announcement or fanfare. It was not untill I read the story about the Bash in the December issue of Kitcar Magazine that I realized what the trophy was for. Many thanks to the WSCB gang as being selected by ones peers is tuly an honor.

I'm glad you picked up on the reference; that's exactly it. I'm happy to report the car is living up to its name. I've turned the power down several times since the initial build; it's a bit much to control.

The only plaid I've found so far was in my shorts after I lost all power at WOT and sent a sonic boom out both sidepipes at ThunderHill from a massive backfire. Distributor/cam gear trouble. Oops. Car is presently dead waiting for me to R&R the cam. Hot tip, don't use Comp's "roller friendly" steel cam gear. It was friendly for 1500 miles (checked it every 100-200 miles) then suddenly decided to eat the cam one day. Both parts are Comp, and were purchased together from Comp. Response was "that happens sometimes". I'm real happy I bonded a bunch of magnets in the pan, and real happy I have datalogging that watches timing advance. I played the log back and saw ignition shake before the rotor in the distributor failed. That data led me to inspect the distributor...and I found the wear. Lucky it didn't go longer; it would have been a complete disaster.

Oh, and several vids on http://www.youtube.com/byronrace if you're interested. Make sure you sample several as I was experimenting with audio and some of them really suck!

Hey Guys, After attending car show in Laughlin, Nev. last weekend I was driving back to Lake Havasu City, AZ where I live and stopped off for a little gas. Now this station was sort of in the middle of nowhere. Suddely a guy came up and wanted to discuss heating problems with his own cobra, wanting to know what if any trouble I had with my cobra overheating. After a long discussion he happily jumped into his truck and left.
Next, another older gentleman (my age) came over and said he use to work for Carrol Shelby as a bodyman and painter. He just loved the car and couldn't stop talking about all his great memories back in the day. He did tell me that back then you could buy a 289 version for $5900.00 and a 427FE sideoiler for $10000.00

Anyway it took me 20 minutes to buy 10 gallons of gas because of all the interest in these cars. Wow! what fun.

Default Cobra Profiling

This must happen to you guys all the time. Driving tame Excalibur (302EFI) on interstate in Arkansas with my 12 year old son. Trooper joins on entrance ramp and follows me for a mile or so. I'm doing 65, the speed limit.

He flashes lights and pulls me over. I say to him "I hope you just want to look at it." He says, I ran the tags and it came up a 2000 Honda. "Sure", I'm thinking. He asks for license and registration. After doing a walk around and asking the usual questions (what year, who made it) goes back to his car to "run the tags" again. Comes back and says dispatcher must have gotten tags wrong, apologizes and sees me off.

On a parking lot, a guy asked me:
-What is the name of this car?
I answered:
"Cobra"
He replied: "So, it is a japanese car!!!"

Several weeks ago we dropped by the house of some friends that had never seen our car...they have two small sons (four and six) that have been gear heads since they were born, always playing with cars and trucks and talking about different cars and which one goes faster. After visiting for a while it was time to go...the wife was inside saying goodbye and I was outside with Dad and the boys. As we are waiting the four year old that is standing next to me looks up and says, "start it up" It just cracked me up that this little kid could be so stoked.

This is pretty abnormal, I think! As we all know.....most everyone approaching these cars gives a look, usually a thumbs up, but at the very least, a smile!! Of course the one exception........the Vette boys!! Amazing how they temporarily become 'blind' when a cobra appears!!
So, last Sat. I was cruisin' down the coast in So Cal...and turned into Main St. in Huntington Beach. Now, this little stretch, 'bout 3 blocks, has all the cars parading up and down during the day....and you see all kinds of nice cars. Upon my return towards the Coast Hwy....I approach the stop sign seeing this C6 approaching..and figure the norm is about to happen.......'sudden loss of eyesight"!! He waves me to slow.....now we are side by side....blocking all other traffice.....and he says, " wow , I just found a kit that needed completion, and I have it coming in about a week! I cannot wait, I am so excited it makes me just go crazy"! I am sitting there, a bit surprized, and said well, then you will have 2 pretty fast cars, and pointed at his black Vette! He says, 'yep, but the fastest one is on the way"!!!
I smiled, took off, and noticed all the people's heads were just glued to us 2 there in the middle of the road.....exchanging pleasantries..........and not one horn honked to ask us to move!! Now, that was pretty cool all the way around!

My story was due in part to this thread and the suggestions herein.

I was gassing up the other day when a vagrant carrying a back pack came shuffeling up to me while i was standing there. The place was packed, mostly with women. He said "hey buddy, I was married to a platinum blond and she always told me that a guy who has a car like this must have a small pecker" On the advice of others on this board I looked up and said "well thats true but my balls are abnormally large so I cant complain" I look over and see a couple of women who were watching intently just start busting up laughing. Not sure if they agreed with me or the vagrant but I left with my hed held high.

It happened a couple of weeks ago on a Friday night...

I was in Austin turning off of 620 onto 2222 and was second in line at the light behind some SUV (Nissan, I think). The light turns green and the SUV takes off in a hurry! I crack the Webers open a little and stay on his rear as we hit about 80, or so (60 zone). Up ahead is a traffic light. It turns red and the SUV takes the right lane, I the left. There is already a car stopped at the light in the left lane, so I ease up behind him and come to a stop. I had just barely stopped when I hear from my right some guy say; "Sir, you have a very nice car there, could you hold the speed down a little for me tonight?" I look to my right and there sits one of Austin's finest with his window down...I shot him a thumbs up and a sheepish grin. Soon the light turns green and immediately the cop turns on his overheads and pulls over the SUV!! My lady friend asks; “Why do you think he stopped him and not you?” To which I replied; “Because he doesn’t have a cool car!!”

The owner of the business were I work has a real nice 4000 mile, '67 390 hp 427 Corvette convertable that is a real nice car. He has it on display in the showroom with a 1967 Brochure on the windshield that my co-worker found for him on EBAY, (Pretty Cool). Several months ago someone told him I had a Cobra and he was soon after in my office asking about it. About 2 weeks ago I took it to work (rarely do) and asked if he wanted a ride. Well, I didn't have to ask him twice! He jumped at the opportunity. The entire sales staff was huddled around the car as we were getting buckled in and anxously waiting when we got back. Drove about 4 or 5 miles and excercised the linkage on the Webers a little, and he was quite impressed. Since then he has mentioned it to 3 of our customers that he has brought into my office. He asked if I wanted to temporarily display it nose to nose with his Corvette on the showroom and use it in a joint newspaper ad to draw traffic. That would be cool.

Being a new Cobra owner, my first story...now granted I dont even have the engine in yet.

Picked up my Superformance from Chicago...and open trailered it back to Detroit two Saturday's ago. I was amazed at the stares, thumb up's, and even had people rolling down their windows driving 70 MPH on I-94 trying to ask questions...the car was just on the trailer!!! At the rest stop, an elderly couple who were RV'ing were walking around the car when we came back from the pit stop...asking a million questions. What is it? Where did you get it? Why doesnt it have an engine? They loved it!

I have never owned anything quite like this car...it's loud, mean, flashy...everything I'm not...maybe thats why i have dreamed of owning one. I wonder what it will be like when its on the road (hopefully soon).

Been to many cruise-ins, but last Saturday was my first show (Motormania II). Got 2 sponsor picks and a top 5 in the "Classics" category.

I figure this is the best place to post this recent story.

I attended our "Cars & Coffee" event in Irvine this past Saturday. A typical day...lots of exotics, muscle cars, Corvettes and some stuff that you don't normally see.

I'm jawing with a couple other Superformance owners (one visiting from Michigan) and some guy approaches my car and starts taking pictures. Then he steps up real close and takes some more. Then he steps back...then steps close, again. He's really looking it over very closely.

He then looks at me, and in this thick Italian accent, he asks, "Issa this-a one real or a replica?" I politely tell him that it's a replica. He shakes his head in disbelief and responds (using his hands like all Italians do), "It's-a so-uh close to a real one!" (holding his fore finger and thumb about an inch apart). He then asks what do the real ones cost? We all chuckled and told him they start around half million, but you may not see too many on the road because they are worth so much. He nodded in agreement, waved and off he went.

The fact that this guy admired my replica that much really, really made my weekend. It also goes to show that a nicely done replica will fool 99.99% of the public 99.99% of the time.

-Dean

Last year I did my first autocross in my SPF. As a newbie, an instructor has to ride with you for the first 3 runs or so. On the first run I just take it easy to learn the course...no problems. On the second run I push it fairly hard, no spins but a couple of short drifts...at the end of the run the instructor gets out of the car, and announces.."I really don't want to ride with you any more, your car scares me!".

Obviously he has too much seat time in Subarus...although those dam things kick my can every time.
