Oil temperature ????
What is the normal-average-safe oil temp
for a 428 in a Cobra with an oil cooler
running at 180 degrees water temp???
Thanks,
Bill Cook

Hi,
You need some heat in the oil to lubricate properly.
In general the oil should be slightly warmer than the water temp, it should run 190 to 210 degrees, I wouldn't run it over 230 degrees.Your oil cooler should have a thermostat and bypass in it to let oil by until it warms up to go through the cooler.

Do you measure the temperature before or after the oil cooler?

Hi,
I would like to know the maximum temp so it would be before the cooler, or have 2 gauges and see how much the temp drops after the cooler.

Bill, I don't know how a stroked SB compares to a BB with regards to oil temp, but my engine runs 190 degrees when tooling around town and sits squarely on 230 when I'm running hard down the Interstate. I do have an external cooler. I'm running below 160 on water temp in pretty much all conditions (love that high-volume Edelbrock water pump).

From what I can find the ideal range is 180 to 200 F. All automotive oil cooler thermostats that I found open at 180F so that seems to be saying something to me!

Take a look at the Canton unit. It places between the block and the cooler, two lines in, two lines out, block and cooler so the oil bypasses the cooler until temp. is reached then it's allowed through the cooler.
The open temp on the Canton is 210. They seem to feel that the temp needs to be this high to allow outgassing of the contaminants.
Expensive but pretty.

Interesting! The Canton unit does open at 215. Guess it is time to drop a note to one of the oil companies! Still it appears to be that you want the oil some where in the 200 degree range.

I agree with DonC. I bought the Canton oil thermostat because it opens at 215. Cool oil does not lubricate properly and does not evaporate the water that condenses in the block and heads. I think you want a 180 degree thermostat. I currently have a 160, but on the highway the car runs at 160. I do not believe it heats the oil sufficiently. I will switch to a high flow 180 with the steam hole drilled in the edge.

I've been thinking about installing an oil t-stat b/c I don't think my oil is getting warm enough- and this time of year, I can guarantee it's not warm enough.
I like that canton unit, but was wondering if 215 is too warm.
DJseed, how did you plumb that unit?
Also, has anyone installed this mocal unit (the OT2) which has a 180 t-stat in it?

edit: never mind the question regarding the mocal OT2. I just saw the other thread entilted "Mocal Oil Thermostat".
