Those seats appear to be for tapered seats only, not the regular gasketed seats that early Chevy smallblocks had. Probably aftermarket heads.

Rick, have you seen this photo (link below) of the spark plug orifice on the heads of my engine. Can you tell, or do you have an opinion as to what type of plug is compatible?

Thanks, Arthur

See below.

I believe your plug is .460" long and the tapered versions are the same. My head is a factory head. I believe they stopped putting the flat on the heads around 1974 or at least that is when they started using tapered plugs.

The photo above is for tapered seat plugs only. It does not appear to have the flat counterbore required for a gasket type plug.

Mobile Photobucket

Rick, Are you looking at my photo, or the one from Joyriding? My photo link is the photobucket above, and it has a chamfer that looks like it may be compatable for the taper seat plug and a counter bore for the gasket seat plug.

I'm thinking that this head was made for both types of spark plugs as I have read that some heads were made this way.

Thanks, Arthur

Wow..I hit it pretty lucky! My head casting is 340292. It is a racing only over-the-counter head made between 1971 and 1974. It has no heat crossover. These were the best cast iron heads with 2.02 and 1.60 valves.

I threw it on a web site and had 2 offers to sell. They are gone and a set of aluminum are going on!

Keep us posted on what type of aluminum heads you get. Pro's and Con's, performance, etc.

I'm considering aluminum heads too with angled plugs.

I've found 1/4" shorter spark plugs that I'll be installing tomorrow. These are 3/8" gasket/crush washer seal plugs. I'll post the plug part number later if all works out successful.

I've been using the shorter plugs for a month now and all seems to be doing well. Accel 8197 Plug #437S. These are 3/4" hex, .375" reach, gasket seat.

The 1/4" extra space helps. But #2 & #7 are still a problem. I've put 5 gaskets on #2 to push the header out an additional 1/4". #7 has 3 gaskets. I'll cut the headers later to correct for this problem.

Perhaps I'll even change the heads to aluminum with angled plug holes. It is my understanding that angled plugs are the option. Now I need to study a variety of photos to see if it is true.

Arthur, glad you're having fun driving...its been a long time for you...congratulations.

I use the Accel shorty plugs on my 59 Apache with a 383. I am using Sanderson cc-12 headers and the shorties gave me just enough room to clear the headers.

Good Luck

Hello Russ, Yes it has been a time...26 years in the making and who knows how many actual man hours. Thousands! But how else is one to spend life when one becomes fang-fast-attached to this passion.

I'm sure you share in this affliction to some degree as I have seen the photos of your Cobra. Just outstanding, your car looks magnificent and I'm sure performs that way too.

Do you have the part number of the shorty plugs you've used. I'd like to take a look at the specifications to see if these would be an option for me. (Thanks for the above link Russ)

Best regards, Arthur

Be careful with them, Gasketed plugs generally require more torque to seal than Tapered seat type. In Aluminum heads 3/8 Thread isn't much.

Rick, Thanks for the heads-up on 3/8" reach in Aluminum. I checked the specifications of the plugs via the link that Russ posted, as I was hoping to find
another shorty option for my iron heads. But these are 3/4" thread length.

Do you have a part number for 5/8" hex x 3/8" thread length, 14mm thread, gasket seat/seal, in a variety of suitable heat ranges?

Thanks, Arthur
