I like the new fabricated intake manifold setup. 100mm RHS should flow heaps!

Dimis,
For safetys sake similar speed cars run together, regardless of class entered. At the nationals some cars would be lapped every 2.5 laps if they were put in our faster group. There is beginner, intermediate and advanced groupings based on lap times & experience. The groupings on the track have nothing to do with the classes for the competition.
For us racers the goal is overall champion & it doesn't matter what class you are in for that. (other than racecars) what you propose with no classes etc is already happening.... It's called a track day, there is one of them every Thursday before the Nationals where you can go out and trundle around as slow / fast as you like with no trophies awarded.

Just looking into what's required for Shelbyfest, aside from getting the car setup for the day. Race suits and helmets - any recommendations for shops in Melbourne with a good range to try out?

I have always used revolution race gear, but I am sure there are cheaper options!

If you can't justify a full kit just yet, just buy a helmet, gloves and wear jeans and a long sleeve top.

Thanks Gav. Plenty of AS1698 certified helmets on eBay for under $100. Are the more expensive ones tested beyond those standards?

Yeah flame suit on. Seriously, what's a good sensible buy without needing to look like the Stig? Helmets I mean.

Hi Guys been away and just read comments on shelby fest and classes.
Winton is not realy a power track more a drivers track I think, so I dont think the engines will make much diffrence in lap times.
The R spec tyres will help in the sprints but not in the sale yards.
Grouping cars with close lap times would be a good idea regardless of class enterd but its up to the drivers to mominate a lap time before groups are set.
Lets be serious this meeting is a part sprint, part motorkhana not a race.
And a celebration of shelby cars lets all have fun with it.
Anyway that's my 2 cents worth.
Regards LJ.

dont ever buy a second hand helmet, unless you would also buy second hand seatbelts?

EDIT: ah I realised you may be talking about a NEW helmet for under $100...that may be evern worse!

Paul, last year was my first ShelbyFest and I went and bought and helmet and gloves from Revolution Racegear in Mitcham - they were pretty helpful and not too pushy. This year I think I will buy some race shoes and then maybe race suit year after. As Gav said a good cotton jumper and jeans.

Be good to see you up there.

Ordered my Kumho KU36s last week. Hopefully they will help lap times as the driver is no good. :-)

Rgds

Gregg

They are a good tyre Gregg - Im absolute rubbish (and described as "reckless" by the King) but still managed a couple of 1:10's at the nats. Im pretty sure the only ones faster were on RSpecs - could be wrong though. You need a good lap to warm them up as they are pretty greasy when cold.

I am only going to say this once publicly Andrew, you did very well at the nationals.
The KU 36's are great becuase they are very predictable, they howl and smoke but continue to grip.
They just need a good heat cycle to get them to start to grip, they are crap before that!

The Kumhos look like a great tire, they have a UTAG rating of 150 I think.
Pretty close to R888 at 100.

Very well priced and like LJ has said with the style of sprints and stuff we do probably a more competive option compared to r specs.

Andrew you did very well at the nationals, on and just off the track. Sorry sometimes well off the track.

Phil

I have the Kumho semi slick V700 and have been driving them on the street for 2 years now. Although they were a little beyond their best at the Nationals I still managed a 1.07. We used to get them from tirerack.com but they don't seem to stock them anymore in my sizes... Were really good value, AU$1150 (when dollar was around high 80c mark) delivered in a week from the States. Equivalent price here then was over $2k.

They look like a good tire, a UTAG of 50.

Are they race use only?

Maybe a good choice for A series, Nationals and shelby fest.

Please buy a good helmet as well as whatever else you can afford. (flame proof suit, socks, shoes, gloves, arm restraints etc etc) You may only need to use it once....but you want it to work when you do have to use it...
I had a relatively soft crash last year...if you can call it that...Peter Tryce a fellow BDR owner in the states did also.....but not as soft as mine.

Take care....
