Default New Pace 427 Build

I started the build of my Pace 427 in September 2013. Mine is chassis #10.

I chose to take Craig up on his offer to build the rolling chassis in his factory in QLD. I am not mechanical and this is my first build, so starting the build at the Pace factory really was a good option and I am very grateful to Craig for suggesting this.

I all it took me just four (long) days to complete this and it was made possible because all the parts were laid out and Craig and his team were extremely helpful in guiding me and answering all my questions.

The car arrived at home in late October (it was on display at the Pace stand at the Cobra Nationals).

Between my work on the rolling chassis and the car arriving home, Craig's team had added the insulation and heatshields, and Neil Streeting of Street 'n' Track) had fitted the engine and diff ( both Holden 6.0L HSV VE LS2) and gearbox (Tremec TKO600).

Since then, the build has happened slowly but surely at home.

To try to keep this brief but informative, I am going to focus on posting photos of the different stages and components as I add them. I hope these are useful for other Pace builders.

If anyone wants other photos to help them with parts of the build, please let me know and I'll forward these on.

Cheers,

Richard

Hi Richard

Welcome. I watch all the Pace build threads - glad to see another one.

I am a while off being ready, but plan an LS and TKO as well - any pics of how that went together would be great.

Enjoy your build

Default Chassis and Body

The chassis is beautifully built and straight. Same with the body

Hi Tony,

I am just figuring out how to attache pictures within the post and once I get that sorted, I should be able to rattle things off quite fast.

The only trouble I have with the engine is that there is only about 2mm clearance between the alternator and one of the chassis struts. Craig is aware of this and will help me fix it, but I understand that a modification has been made to the chassis to make sure this doesn't happen in other builds. I'd add a photo here, but I am not yet sure how to do this.

Hi Richard

I am happy to be sitting back and having guys like you and Brad paving the way. I am a long way from help down here, and I am sure I will need lots of help. I am good at Lego - that is about it though! There should be plenty of 427's finished by the time I am ready to go.

I use Photobucket to add photos to the forum, but their app is a bit glitchy... Much easier on the PC, but then I have to get off the recliner...

Welcome and thank you Richard! The more info and pics on this forum the better!

And you seem to be going ok with adding the pics so far.

I've actually seen your chassis and body in Craig's factory a few times last year. It will be good to follow your progress.

Hi Tony,
You may not be as isolated from the cobra crowd as you think, there are a few in Tassie you know. Do you know Armin? He's a good bloke and I'm pretty sure you could ask him for some close by knowledgeable cobra advice when the time comes. He may not have had too much exposure to a Pace but I'm sure he could advise you on general mechanical cobra stuff and find his way round a Pace pretty quick.

I am using the gallery/album function of the forum and pasting links to images from there. Seems to work, but I have to wait for a moderator to approve all of the posts before they will appear here. I guess that will happen in the next 24 hours...

Good questions:

I am going with 17 inch Halibrands and one roll bar at this stage. I had the chassis built with the mounts for two, so I may still go that way, but at the moment I just think it looks better with one. I've probably got a year before I have to make a final decision.

The gearbox is a Tremec 5 speed, because I prefer that to 6 gears, and the positioning of gear lever is much better than using the Holden box, which would have had the gear lever way back down the centre console. the Tremec puts it at just the right position to lean your arm on the console and have the gear lever at your fingertips.

It is all personal choice of course, but I think that 6 gears in a Cobra means you picked the wrong engine

I love the gelcoat colour. I've seen a Superformance car that exact colour with gloss black stripes and it looked amazing!

Regards.

Default Front & Rear Brake lines

Front lines fitted - note all are pre-shaped/bent so there is no need to shape them to fit

This shows where the front brake lines will meet up with the brake cylinders on the pedal box to be fitted later

Fitting the rear brake lines to the tunnel

As rear brake lines exit the tunnel. Note that I filed the chassis edge and rounded it slightly to avoid wear on the brake line at this point

Rear brake lines fitted (note fuel line is also visible here)

For some reason, my first postsw on building the rolling chassis need to be approved by a moderator, but this one clearly didn't. I hope all the others appear today/tomorrow, though they may now be out of synch.

Thanks Mando. I am still undecided on the final colour, and especially the stripes. The Pace is such a good finish that it is almost like having a fully painted car.
