It has to do with the amount of travel of the suspension. One way that has worked for me is to figure out the minimum and maximum of suspension travel so when the shock is installed it is usually extended to about half of it's travel. Just about every kit I have seen this is figured out making it just a matter of what brand you want. As far a spring weight goes it depends on how much weight is on the front end and how stiff you want it. Remember the spring holds the weight, the shock just dampens the oscillations of the spring. Club Cobra has been a valuable source of information for me and I'm thankful for the "brains" in this group of very special people.
