Rear sway bar for CR
Hi All,
Is anyone running a rear sway bar on their CR or should the question be is it worth running a rear bar?
I only ask as it seems there are no mounting points on the chassis for one. Best weld then on before final paint to chassis (I've said that 3 times now).
They may have been missed when building my chassis. I'm also short so rear bracing supports from the seat belt mounting frame the the chassis.
Thanks,
Dale.

Yes I do
HI Dale,
Yes I run a rear sway bar.
I would say weld in the mounts, easier now than later.

What sway bar do you use ?
I was looking at that and am also at the stage were I am getting a whole lot of job's listed for the next "BOE" (Body Off Event).
Which sway bar do you use ? And how is it mounted? Is it the Ford one off the AU ? Or is it a custom made jobbie like to front one ended up being from Pedders ?
I am happy to weld some brackets on or whatever is needed, and would like to see how you have done it.
Phil, do you have any pics ? And is it mounted above or below the diff ?
Geez, I ask a lot of questions :-)

rear sway bar
The rear swy bar is a custom job, nothing fancy, Pneall designed it and pedders made it.
I had to make an adapter plate to mount it but when I paint I will move the mounts outboard of the chassis.
I will take some pics tonight and post them.

You can get a small roll bar from a older 4 cylinder car, equally a VT-VZ commodore has a nice small rear roll bar. My Lotus 7 clubman has no roll bars at all and handles better than any car I've driven. You only need a roll bar if you have a high center of gravity relative to your suspension roll center. (not likely on a cobra!!)

Hey there Churchy, sounds like it might be time to get some numbers on Pedders doing a run of rear sway bars (just like we did with the front).
If anyone is going to organise this, can I please be counted in.
Some pics would be great thanks PhilM.
We will need all we can to stop you adding kill numbers to your door.

Pics
As you can see we are going away with the car so it has to be in peices the week before.
The pics below whow the roll bar but I have half pulled it out to get the diff out, it comes out by dropping the front first
The bar is only light but settles the car nicely, the rear tended to wobble or waddle like a duck the bar helps this.
In this pick you can see the tab with the 2 holes, that is where it is mounted, I would weld those tabs on the other side if the tube. I made a plate that allows the mounts to be in the correct postion.
I will post some more pics when I put it back together.
Peter, dont worry about giving away secrets, when they run chevy power they need all the help they can get.

Phil
did you design your own rear bar and get made or is it Ford original. I know
the waddle feel you talk about and would like to remove that if possible with a sway bar.

Off the shelf
HI Leeroy,
The bar is a custom design that Phil and I got pedders to make.
Phil made one first, and then I used it and phil then made another to replace it.

Thanks Phil,
Its totally different from the original Ford bar as yours looks as if it is accessed from from under the car rather than weaving up through the frame work.
I'II see if I can find Pedders number and give them a call.
Cheers,
dale.

The Ford bar can be used, not sure if there is much difference as my car is not on the road yet.

I had a bar made that's based arround the Ford design. It's got 3 adjustment holes on the ends. It's a real pain to get it in and out with the axles in place.
The "Phil Bar" I reckon it's the way to go. It looks much easier to work on and adjust. Definitely a future upgrade.
Cheers

Spoke to Terry at Pedders Hornsby and he thinks the spring works has a template and they should be around $225 each.
Hoping to be at Winton and will look at Phils then.
Cheers.

If you are doing a swaybar run at Pedders let me know as I would be keen to get one also.

Count me in
If you guys are doing a sway bar run you can count me in.
Pedders were great with the front bars and the more we ordered, the cheaper they were.

Dale,
The original chassis with the Ford IRS had mounts for the original Ford sway bar. This was subsequently removed from the latter chassis because the rear bar induces too much oversteer into the vehicle. - Not good in a vehicle with such a short wheelbase! This is especially so if the road is even slightly damp, & very tricky if wet! All to easy to swap ends. Most customers who had the rear bar fitted found the handling much more predictable when it was removed.
The race chassis are fitted with a rear bar, however they are also fitted with a much larger than standard front bar to restore the balance.
Cheers,
Ian
