Well, I would buy all the essentials up front. Like suspension, radiator, steering, etc. I don't know what gets included and what doesn't -- I would just have Peter make a secondary list for me of all the things that I had to also find, one way or another, before the car will be able to move safely under its own power. Shocks, bell housing, head lights, wheels, tie rods, steering knuckles... you need to have an inclusive list of all the stuff that you're not getting. There are a zillion little things that go on these cars. Towards the end of my build, Doug was calling me so much to get my "OK" on things that I finally told him "look, if you think it ought to be on there, just put it on there, you don't have to check with me." That actually worked better than I could have imagined.

Upfront disclaimer, my first Cobra had a BB Ford and my second was built with a SB Chevy. I immediately pulled the motor and put it on Craigslist and dropped in a SB Ford.

With that being said, Carroll Shelby did attempt to work a deal with Chevy first correct? What if they said yes? We'd all be building them with a GM power plant still I'd assume. I've never been a Chevy guy so I'm very pleased with the direction he was "forced" to go.

I guess I bring this up because it's often referred to as a "sin" to use the Chevy motor when it was in fact his first choice.

Just my .02 cents.

I worked with Doug extensively both before and after I got the car in my garage. Doug possesses several extra helpings of patience.

You have plenty of time. The ERA delivery queue is a good year or more long....

That's not so bad. I ordered an ERA brochure in 1980 and placed my deposit in 2009.

Now the excitement starts.

LOL and I thought I was bad visiting Peter in 2001, not having my checkbook or I would have written a deposit check at the time with a big smile on my face after having my first ride in an ERA. Just as well, though, as the divorce in 2004 (and maybe earlier if I HAD my checkbook! ) would have made ownership short-lived.

Here it is 15 years later and I'm getting serious again!

Now, to find some of those schnortzy new sunburst wheels!

AC

Glad I got my deposit in a few weeks ago. I going to head back out in November. Just to take it all in again.

For $30 (refundable on kit purchase) you can download the manual:

Download instructions for the manuals and web site

There's a freebee without pictures, but not nearly so entertaining.

Very interesting thread, I´m also in the planning process for a future build and have many of the same questions and thoughts. The only other manufacturer I considered was Kirkham - but they don't make a kit, which is the only way for me.

I´m looking forward to following your build thread when you get started on your dream car!

Same deal for me. After seeing many in person, it came down to Kirkham and ERA. The main purpose of my build was to do it with my kids so I chose ERA.

Welcome aboard! This is almost like a real dream, where the stranger comes out of nowhere, and you're left wondering why was he in my dream?
