If you do end up cutting the block spacer just bolt the spacer to the block without the bellhousing and scribe the cutout in the block for the starter to the spacer or you can bolt the starter to the spacer and do the same thing. Don't throw away the piece you cut out. You may change starters or flywheels some other time and the part you cut out can still be used as a spacer, it will give the starter full contact between the bellsousing and starter housing.
If you know someone with a band saw this won't be that hard.
Hopefully this won't be the case.
