Burgers
Everyone has a differing opinion what the ultimate burger consists of; Jimmy Buffet believes it's a medium-rare cheeseburger with an onion slice, lettuce, tomato..Heinz 57, mustard, kosher pickle - french fried pototoes and a beer.
Several of you drive to meet at various hamburger joints ...
Whimpy's slogan from Popeye-"I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today." The facination of a piece of ground meat between a bun has gone back many years... and is still as simple as it was originally. How cool is that? Sure there are variations.. but how eclectic, how simple, how vintage..how NOW is that?? I could make a great argument..how it relates to Cobras... (really, I could...!)
So... name your burger...

Up here in the Michigan area, there is the Halo Burger. 1/2 pound, tomato, lettuce, pickle and olives.
That seems to be the local winner for a burger.

Chili, (along with onions, cheese, tomatoes, and a few Jalapeno peppers!) like the Tommy's burger chain does it here in L.A.!!!
In-n-Out has the next best burgers for a chain.

Ahhh... A subject close to my heart... literally!!
Rare burger, half 70% lean, half ground sirloin, with a 3/4 cooked slice of bacon diced and blended with the meat.
Egg bun with sesame seeds, hot buffalo sauce, jalapenos, cream cheese, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, diced tomato, extra sharp dill pickles, and a lot of napkins!

One of the things I miss about the SF Bay Area is the food. When it comes to burgers though I think Nation's is on the tops. It is a 2 fisted eating feast with half a tomatoe, and half an onion on it. I take theses 2 items off, and eat them seperately, because there is so much. That way it will fit in the the old pie hole. Great pies too are to be had there. HOT off the grill, made to order, and a spoon of grease thrown in for the old heart! You can get it any way you like too.

In Chicago, for the best ground meat, go to Hot Dougs.
Yes, it looks like a big hotdog, but it's truly ground meat, in a casing. All natural.
The pot roast dog tastes just like pot roast. The duck fat fries are just that, fries done in duck fat.

There's a small burger shop in Melbourne that sells burgers and Hot Dogs.
It's called the Dog House.
They do a really old fashion tradition burger with everything - the lot.
Pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato, cheese, bacon, egg, beetroot, ground beef even advocado.
Quite expensive at $9.00 - 11.00
Geelong had a small franchise of Burger outlets called Burger Inc. that sell a gourmet type of burger. Again expensive at $10 - 13 each.

The most expensive burger in New York City
A 20-ounce (560-gram) hamburger fashioned from ultra-tender Kobe beef debuted this week at the landmark Old Homestead restaurant in New York. At $US41 ($A71.32), it is believed to be the most expensive hamburger in the city. And yes, it comes with fries.
It is the first time the 135-year-old steakhouse has put a burger on its menu. The restaurant bills it as "The World's Most Decadent Hamburger".
"This is not about price," restaurant owner Marc Sherry said, when the restaurant sold nearly 200 of the new burgers in the first four days.
"This is an event."
Kobe beef, imported from Japan, comes from cattle raised on beer and massaged daily to make the meat soft and succulent.
The burger, which has a piece of herb butter in the middle of each patty, comes on a special roll with exotic mushrooms and microgreens - shredded baby lettuce.
Put away the bottled ketchup. The burger comes with a homemade ketchup, mustard or horseradish sauce.

The best "burger" is getting a knife and fork along with a plate on which resides a medium rare filet mignon with a baked potato (with just butter) and a veggie. Let your teeth do the slow and easy grinding of the beef, not the butcher's machine. Oh ya, the bun will be a nice basket of warm dinner rolls on the side. No need for the rabbit food (lettuce, onions, etc). That stuff goes into what is called a "salad".
My father owned a butcher shop when I was a kid, so my sisters and I grew up eating all the best cuts of beef and chicken, and pork, and lamb, etc.

That is the one thing that I do miss about Southern Calif. is all the good places to eat. San Francisco has some good ones and Sacramento has a couple, but up here we have nothing. I liked the T-Bone burgers that were made from tender T-bone steak and had everything you could think of on them. But I haven't even heard of them for years so they are probably gone now.
And we have the New McDonald's non fattening burgers. Made from replica buns and replica meat with nothing else.

Anthony Bourdain says having a hamburger made of Kobe beef sort of defeats the purpose of the Kobe steak, with all of its marbling, which is trimmed off.
Course, he eats bugs, so maybe he's full of it.

Remember when Mickey D's put the burgers in the little styrofoam containers? Know why?
Because some of the plastic rubbed off on the "burgers" and doubled the nutritional value and flavor!
I roll my own with cheddar and bacon mixed in. Sometimes some Merlot or water added to make 'em juicier......

Believe it or not, Wendy's fast-food has pretty good burgers for a chain...something about the way they cook 'em, almost taste like pan-fried from home.
Best thing about In-n-Out is that you can have them make as many patties on one bun as you desire.....also "Animal" style, with extra lettuce and tomatoes.
I like my In-n-Out "ketchup and mustard instead", with a slice of onion, but sometimes grilled onions. AND they have those little green jalapenos as well!

You all have interesting takes on the burgers.
I am somewhat surprised, however, no one has mentioned my beloved White Castle,Top Hat or Crystal! I know...some might even consider SPAM as a "burger"...?? Hot dogs..or coney-dogs.. that's a whole different topic..and love...
I've been facinated with the Juicy-Loosey...a burger that the cheese is cooked in the middle of the burger..
Nothing is better (IMO) than a burger that is "drive-in" style grilled, onion rings..and a hand-dipped malt!!
