Retiring, WHICH State?

Oinie, have you considered other parts of Hawaii? I always thought Hilo would be a nice place to live (have an old schoolmate practicing there), and there's more than enough road on that rock.

Or Up Country on Maui.

You're living on the Disneyland Isle...bound to get to anyone.

Personally, Cheerleader and I still think about Northern Wales. Assolutely fell in love with the area and the people...extremely laid back. Cold, but not brutally so (Gulf Stream hits that part of Britain). A bit cheaper than the rest of Great Britain from what we've seen.

They sorta talk English up there too.

I've lived quite a few different places but always have come back to Kansas City.

Seattle - I'd shoot myself in the head if I had to stay one more week that the 18 months we lived there. What a dreary shidthole of a place that is.

Louisianna - loved the smell of the pines and some of the finest cooking I've ever eaten. Too humid and too close to New Orleans.

Beverly Hills - great when we were young but too expensive for old retired folks.

Salt Lake City - Nice clean town, low crime rate, mountains, skiing, Park City, great hunting and fishing. Displaced Californians have driven housing prices out of sight. My old home just sold for over 400% more than I sold in for in 1990.

So I've decided to rent a place in either Austin or Corpus Christi from December to April and then come on back home for the decent months. I've got everything here I want, 10 acres, 2600 sq ft home with two barns and a 1200 sq ft shop. 6% income tax max, $2,300 property taxes, low gas prices, who could ask for more.

My first search was the Big Island, like you say, plenty room, race track, not a bad call. I'm very familiar with all the islands, having worked and lived on them (Kaui, Maui, Big Isle) many times over the years. Maui's to crowded, up country is nice but real expensive for the kind of place I'm looking for. Big Isle's OK, but to get a 'nice' place for the money, you pretty much gotta be out in the sticks, or Hilo side (rains a lot). Found some great prices in the Puna area, drug dealers could be a problem, better lock the doors. I hear Volcano area has some really cheap land, and it should be open again as soon as the latest lava flow and sulphur emissions get under control (it's currently under an evacuation order or something like it). That could have something to do with the cheap land prices... Yard maintenance is a piece of cake, grass don't grow on a lava field. I hear the 'water cachement' systems work pretty good too if you keep the tank clean enough, no city water, sewer, cable, etc.

Got to agree with you regarding Seattle. It's a festering sh*t hole. The day I retire will be the last day I live here.

The more I think about this the more I realize the world is blank sheet of paper and I can color it just about any way I want to. All my life the world has been seen in term's of 'employment' as a primary factor of where to live. I don't hardly know where to begin with this new freedom of expression, interesting.

Checked out San Antonio and Albuqerque today... Hadn't even thought about places like Wales, maybe I should expand my thought process' (at the risk of blowing my mind).

Now considering motor homes and some kind of trailer with the Cobra in the back and living quarters in the front.

I am thinking about the north of Spain for a few years when I am ready-have family and it is beautiful. Reno is nice- (Jamo I bet we know some of the same guys that moved there) it is a place for great driving. You can go in any direction for as long as you want- sort of a hub. Even looks like one on the map. I have been to Provo, Utah a couple of time-damn that is nice country- very user friendly.

Sounds like fun challenge.

Now that is a nice motor home and you could just move any time you get tired of a place. Live out in the desert for a few month, move close to a town for a while, the possibilities are endless. And Exxon/Mobil may help you buy it as they will expect you to use their fuel.

Well here we are over a year later and I've ALMOST decided.

Looks like Southern Oregon, Ashland, Medford area. Close enough to Nor Calif for a week or a weekend get-a-way with friends. Better tax picture in Oregon, closer to family if I head North. WAY better climate than Northern or even middle Oregon.

Yup, looks like Southern Oregon will be the ticket!

I retired from Florida to the mountains of north Georgia. Beautiful mountain roads to tour, whole lot of car people here, low cost of living. one hour from Road Atlanta and an hour from NHRA in Commerce Ga. I get deer every day and black bear almost every week. I love it.
