BB FE wanted
I am still looking at all options, am now considering a big block Ford engine for a Cobra buiild. Price (hopefully) should correspond to engine condition/ build status. I have a decent budget, can and will consider all powerplants in 390 - 427 - 428 range. Please try to include as many details as possible. I am reviewing what is available and will go from there.

I would highly recommend talking to Eric at Performance Engineering. He builds awesome reliable engines and stands behind them. (513) 738-5001
If you have any questions I am more than willing to help.
Good Luck...

engine
Thanks Bandit1,
I am or have coresponded with most of the engine builders listed on club cobra, as well as a few others. They have all been very helpful with advice and recommendations. I am continuing my research and attempting to review all options and see whats available privately. I might very well end up with a pro engine build, but with this kind of cash on the line, I just need to be thorough. You never know what could be out there...............

My choice is a 428. Easy to find blocks (comparatively), will give easy 400-450 hp without stress, run on pump gas with Edelbrock heads and 10.5 cr.
I am going with 2x4 carb setup for the looks but a single 4 makes more sense for tuning purposes. I don't plan to put more than $3500 into it to get what I need.
You can do the same thing with a 390 but the hp will be down a little of course. a 427 will double that cost plus.

428
jschiller,
Thanks for the input, do I understand you correctly when you say"double the cost for a 427", are you indicating you can get into that engine with a reasonable amount of goodies and a dual quad for under 10K?

You can if you assemble it yourself. Not if you are paying someone else

The 427/428 FE engine will cost alot more money than a "more reliable" and more horsepower 460 engine. You also will be paying more money for a used 427/428 than a brand new 460 engine and a new 427/428 engine will be atleast double the price of the new 460 engine, with less horsepower. FE parts are also very expensive.

The 429-460ci 385 series are certainly more plentiful and have a very good selection of performance parts available. And will cost less to build as noted by BANDIT 1.
But its not a FE and thats what makes all the difference to me. It won't fit in an ERA ( and maybe others?) due to the width across the heads unless you modify the footboxes.
If its all-out HP you want and it fits in the engine bay a 460 is fine.
But since lineslinger only mentioned FE engines I think he looking for the authenticity factor as well.

I was under the impression he was interested in a Superformance Cobra and the 385 series engine is in a majority of the big block Superformance Cobra's. If you have narrowed your search down to just the FE engine family, I do apologize for bringing up the 429/460 engine family. I had a 427 engine in my 69 Pro Street Mach 1 and it was one hell of a ride.

Snakecharmer on this site has a very nice 427 side-oiler for sale at a bargain price, and he is a very honorable guy. Try sending him an e-mail or you can also probably contact him at the Texas Cobra Club board.

Clayfoushee,
thanks for checking out the thread. I talked with "Stretch" by phone last week and was ready to put down a deposit. My better half informed me that new floors were in order in our home before a "big noisy engine was needed", thus I am now leaning toward a component build instead of a completed engine. I would have had to lower my offer considerably. He came across as a "stand up guy" and I"really wasn't comfortable doing that, so I called him backed explained my situation to which he responded in understanding and gracious manner. You were right.

I tried to give away my 428 for 3 months complete with flywheel, clutch intake. Was asking $1100. everyone interested wanted it crated and shipped for that.
I sold it on e-bay for $1900 to a guy with an automatic. I got $100 more for the flywheel and am selling the clutch now.
I have a set of rebuilt C8AE-H heads, intake carb and spacer on e-bay now for $525. You can have it for $475 if you can get to it before it sells.
