How do you get the T-trigger on the ford round shifter through the boot?

Procedure "A" - Remove the shifter lever from the mechanism (two bolts) and pass the lower end through the top of the boot first. Then re-attach the lever to the mechanism before bolting the boot back to the trans tunnel.
Procedure "B" - A pair of channel locks and a twist of the wrist should do the trick.

I will fit over the T handle if you are careful, maybe a little lube? Use your imagination on that part. (we're not talking 90 WT here)

My shifter is a factory 1965 mustang and the trigger is functional and doesn't come off. Don't want to tear the boot.

I repeat............it will go over the functional T handle, take the knob off first, and go slowly. I've done it several times.

Have you removed the knob and looked in the hole for a set screw?

The boot is on. A little 10w30 and a piece of 1/4 round stock and it streached over. Thanks again,, Club Cobra and friends come through again.

Better late than never.....
I assume you're talking about the reverse gear engagement T handle, which on mine is non-functional but there for the original look.
I can take mine apart as follows:
1 - unscrew the ball off the top
2 - there's a pin down inside the shaft that sticks through the T-bar to keep if from sliding out the sides
3 - Use a magnet retriever, or just give the t-bar a sharp pop upward and watch out for the pin to fly out the top of the shaft
4 - slide the t-bar out sideways
5 - put on the boot and reverse to re-assemble

Wouldn't it be a whole lot simpler to just remove the shifter...2 bolts...then re-install after slipping the shifter thru the boot? Why make it into such an ordeal? 5 min to jack the car up and put it on stands, 2 min. to remove the bolts, 5min to putz around, 3 min to slip the boot on and drop into place, 2min to bolt it up, 5 min to remove the stands. Another 5 min to screw the boot and trim ring down. 30 min tops. Damn K.I.S.S. always works.

HSSS427 is right. I just did this.
Only addition to his process:
1a) Remove set screw.
And as he says, keep the magnet handy, because the spring will shoot the set screw into the like colored carpet.
