edelbrock
My car has a 351 Performer intake and 750 edelbrock carb....i was looking over it and noticed there is no spacer plate between the carb and intake....should there be one?.....I am having issues with the motor, running very rich, run on, black smoke comming out of the side pipes, when i tried to adjust the idle mix it doesnt change the motors idle. My vaccum advance isnt working, thats a MSD pro billet dist , so im going to tackle that...one issue i may have is hood clearance if i have to run a spacer plate....im BARELY clearing what i have now...

If you have the matching manifold for a spreadbbore carb there is not a need for a spacer. The Edelbrock carbs can be a great running carb if you are willing to get in there & get it set up properly. I learned a lot when i set mine up but came to realize that it's a lot more fun to just set a Holley on, make a few adjustments & go.

isnt the point of an edelbrock the ease of just bolting it on..setting the idle mix and go?....this is the way i bought the car...and its full of bugs...PO had it built and then sold it as soon as it was done...and with my limited equipment...it gets tough to find the probs.....
anyone out there wanna earn some side money and help get my cobra running better?....lol.....

There are so many variables with an edelbrock carb that can be altered by changing metering rods, springs, jets & squiters that allow you to fine tune your carb to accurately match your engines power curve. This makes it a highly effective metering block when set properly but having extra variables in this manner only makes it more difficult to set. I knew next to nothing about carburetors when I bought my first edelbrock. By the time I educated myself & got mine running properly I felt confident that i could probably handle just about any carb out there. I would suggest you read the edelbrock manual. That is a great source for carb theory, understanding & maint.

I fought with a Holley 650 carb for months trying to get it to run right, even paying to have it professionally rebuilt and tuned. Spent a lot of $$$ on jets, floats re-build kits ,etc. Never ever did it run right. The guy I gave it to, a die hard Holley guy, still is messing with it
I bought a Edlebrock, out of the box it ran. After just changing the rods and springs once, the car ran better than it ever had with the Holley. A few more minor tweaks and it performs thru the whole power band.
Get a manual for your carb model from Edlebrock, they sent me a new one at no charge(knocked over a can of oil paint on mine). Study the manual, it pretty much walks you thru the whole process.
If you still have questions then call their Tech line:
1-800-416-8628 from 7:00am to 5:00pm, Monday-Friday, PST.
Everyone I've spoken with there was quite knowledgeable and walked me thru what ever problem I had, recommended part #'s, etc. This was not just on the carb either.
Their Tech people were a whole lot more helpful than anyone I got at Holley Tach line.

The book is really informative! Your bound to learn a lot!
I can't say I've had anything but good experiences with properly sized Holley's. Where I've gotten into trouble is when I installed a vacuum secondaries holley that was too big.

Oldmachdriver, I sent you an email.
I thought my Edelbrock was a POS until I got to understand it. Now she's running pretty smooth with plenty of zip.
Now If I could only get that bugger to run a little cooler.

I have found the Edelbrocks to do pretty well out of the box. Usually the most difficult is the transition from part throttle to wide open. The springs on the metering rods will help transition from lean to rich based on vacuum and they have charts to show which ones to go to for richer or leaner. The squirt volume is controlled by a linkage adjustment so if it hesitates when you stomp on it you may need a bigger squirt to go with the sudden increase in airflow.

One other thing is don't allow a large air flow over the top of the carb. It will really screw up your air/fuel settings and you'll never figure out why until you realize the manual is not bsing about that little fact
