Question Can Fuel Injected 5.o be converted to Carb

New Member, I have a fuel injected 5.0 Ford Cobra engine, anyone know if it can be converted to carberated? I'd like the look of the original type and I can't troubleshoot this if problems. It already has hard starting problems.

Yes, many of them have been converted to carb.

PULL THE UPPER AND LOWER PLENUMS AND EVERYTHING THAT IS ATTACHED TO THEM. COMPUTER, FUEL INJECTOR WIRING HARNESS ECT. INSTALL A INTAKE AND 600 OR 650 CFM CARB. A 302 ENGNE NEED 541 CFM AT 6500 RPM. DON'T OVER CARBURETOR YOUR MOTOR! REPLACE THE FUEL LINE AND FUEL PUMP. EFI FUEL PUMPS ARE RATED AT 38 TO 40 LBS PRESSURE. MOST ARE IN THE FUEL TANK. CARB PUMPS ABOUT 4 TO 7 LBS. THEY ARE MOUNTED CLOSE TO THE FUEL CELL. OR YOU CAN USE A MECHANICAL PUMP. USE A 3/8" STEEL FUEL LINE. MAYBE A NEW THROTTLE CABLE AND OTHER SMALL PARTS.

SELL ALL YOUR FUEL INJECTION STUFF ON THE ffcobra.com SITE.

I came across an '88 302 ci longblock from a friend of a friend of someone who owes me alot of money.

Anyway, I can get it for a steal if I wanted it, BUT I didn't want to get into the EFI picture just yet so I am holding back.

BUT, you are saying that it can be turned into a normal "carbuerator" intake with not to many issues?

You have experience, or know someone who has done this successfully already?

Same HP & torque +/- ?

Awaiting your answer.............to call in that "favor"

Anyone else, please feel free to answer also.

there is no difference in the bottom end of a carburated or EFI engine, so just take off the injection system, set it aside and bolt up an intake and carb. The HP and torque will be affected both + or - with your choice of intake and carb. I would suggest buying a matched pair from Edelbrock giving you the Hp and torque levels you are looking for, but not knowing what cam you have or the flow rate of the heads, that's an educated guess.

Yes you can and I converted my Mountaineer motor to Carb B4 I installed it in my Hunter Build. Here is a list of all my parts:

1997 Mountaineer 5.0, GT-40p heads, FMS pedistal moung 1.6 rollers, Edelbrock Performer RPM, Holley 600 vac. sec., 4 into one headers, trick flow stage one cam, Mallory Unilight Distributor, Mallory Hyfire VI, MSD Coil, Moroso plug wires, canton 9QT road race pan,Tremec 3550 & Mcloed Bellhousing from Fortes.

You will need to get rid of a lot of unnecessary wiring. I startd with a EZ wiring kit which is similar to a Painless Wiring kit. Basically you need to pull the upper and lower intake and replace with a Carb intake like a Performer RPM or a Weyand Stealth for a 302. If you are building a high rpm motor you will need a single plane but expect to loose some low RPM power. I used a 600 holley and it works great but I think a 650 Double Pumper would be better for the light Cobra. I would not go over 650cfm unless you are building a motor designed for 7000rpm and I doubt that is what you are after.

If you notice I used a trick flow stage one cam which has a split pattern on the duration and lift. This favors the exhaust side whick many racers using a carburator say the split pattern helps scavange the cylinder which helps a carb alot. It helps somewhat on a EFI setup but remember the computer might not like the split pattern. Almost all cams were set up this way before cars switched to EFI. Ford heads are notorious for poor exhaust ports so cam grinds were done this way to ovecome this. The GT-40P heads were basically the Old GT-40 heads with exhaust ports raised and rerouted to improve exhaust flow to imporve emmissions and torque. They make great performance heads and are just as good as some of the lower end Aluminum heads.
