Unless you put a torch to the wheel material I will continue to have my doubts. Without hijacking the thread, can you quickly remind me what transmission you have in your ERA?
All you'd have to do is pick it up. 30% lighter is pretty noticeable.
Are you saying you don't trust Halibrand, or the folks claiming to have magnesium wheels?

No, I just want to see Chas set his wheels on fire. I vaguely remember some sort of warning that if you throw water on burning magnesium it does something peculiar -- like the oxygen and hydrogen separate or something and when the flame hits it it's pretty cool to watch.

I'm sure the military has all sorts of old FED-STD's on that stuff (what's left of them, anyways).
One of my employees takes magnesium from his friends shop and they shoot at it in the desert. He says it's pretty fun.

This is What I had in Mind...
I had something like this in mind when Chas puts the torch to his wheels with a watering can next to him for safety....

I bought mine in 2006 from Halibrand. I think they were around $765/wheel at the time. Had them shipped to ERA for car #726. Peter called when they arrived & said they looked great.

Maybe Ron can find a shot in his archive.
I do have closeups of the casting legend on original wheels, but I hesitated to post for fear of revealing to you all what magnesium looks like after a few years. :p
Still want to see it?

We know if left to turn-but mine are 18 years old and look like posted above-with A LOT of effort.
C'mon Ron, it's the casting of brand name and markings I'd like to see. 3170 should be correct-no?
I think Barry Blackburn (sp?) owned the company when I bought mine-can you confirm that?

That looks like credible evidence.
Love the dripping sarcasm.
Are the wheels here yet?
There's a pic here somewhere on CC of an alloy CSX4000 with magnesium wheels that turned a long time ago. I love that look.

CSX4323, but I can't capture just the pic, so here's the page:
Maybe one of the CSX/SPF dealers, ERA and/or Kirkham (or whatever manufacturer) would like to have a set or two in inventory for future customers.
Say, those three Kirkhams that will be built with SOHC engines, one twin tubrocharged and one fully polished. Darren? :)
I might be interested in investing in the extra sets needed to fill the order. I'm sure they will sell over time. I would be more interested in a new mold for 17's. Darren

Mag wheels with casting numbers for front and rear...no "halibrand" on them

Darren,
If you're saying what I think you're saying, that's HUGE!!!**)
So even if they only run 15's, you're in for perhaps more than one set?

Number 3!!
OK. Number 3 has joined the list. Thank you Darren!

I'm on the fence at this point. What is the approximate pricing?
Thanks,
David

David,
Probably in the neighborhood of $3,200 - $3,500 but don't quote me. I have yet to get the price from Halibrand. Richard is working on the details as we speak.

And if you don't put in the endless hours of cleaning that ERAChas does, they end up looking like the ugly photo above? Or do they have a magic coating on them?

The last time Halibrand sold magnesium Cobra wheels in 2003-2006, the fronts were $765/ea and the rears were $795/each, which is $3,120 for a set of 4.

The Dow 7/dichromate coating keeps the wheels from aging, but for the outer rim. The outer rim is/was uncoated.
