And if you don't put in the endless hours of cleaning that ERAChas does, they end up looking like the ugly photo above? Or do they have a magic coating on them?

The Dow 7/dichromate coating keeps the wheels from aging, but for the outer rim. The outer rim is/was uncoated.

Why don't they put the magic coating on the outer rim?

Because the gold colored outer rims would look funny? Heliphino.

Surely they can make a clear coating that work. But I hear you...

Mag wheels would be a huge mistake for you pal, given the humidity conditions in which you live. Also, mag can oxidize under clear coats. It's just very porous.

... and don't the front ERA pin drive hubs require a slightly different backspacing as well?

Some people (lots, actually) likes what magnesium does with some age. But I'm not sure that it isn't coated. I'll ask when I speak to Richard next.
But we've all seen how clean you keep your undercarriage. What's a little more polishing time on the coolest wheels around? Wouldn't it be nice for your ERA to find some mags when you open that bubble at Easter?

Why the interest, patrickt?
Should I keep spot number 4 warm for you?
