You can still bleed it. If it has a hose, take vice grips (or they make a special hose clamp) and clamp off the front side that is missing the caliper. Be warned that you might have to replace the hose as it might crush it, but at this stage of the game, it probably doesn't matter. Heck, that could have been the problem!

You said "front brake". Do you mean the front brakes were grabbing or just one side of the front brakes? That could make a huge difference.

Another thought...if it has an old style master set-up for drum brakes, could it have a residual valve in the master causing the rear to stay slightly engaged and overheat? This was a problem with my car when I first got it. I took the master apart, removed the residual valve, and the rear brakes worked fine after that. My car has a MG front suspension with Wilwood calipers and a Jag rear.
