I'm so old that I remember buying Royal Castle burgers for a dime each, filling up the tank with 2 bucks, going to an air-conditioned Drive-in movie theatre and pulling the crank on my 4 track cassette player to engage the wheel.
I'm also old enough to have seen a "Real" Cobra bought as an insurance buy back for $1,000 cause the original owner had an engine fire that only singed the hood paint and the insurance company totaled it. Today, you can roll just about any car and thay will repair it before declaring it totaled. This Cobra incident occurred as a result of a tip from Ford City, a junk yard dedicated to Fords only close to Downtown Miami. Bought me a $1200 '68 GT500 convertible with 30K miles in 1970 at same location. Only thing missing were the hubcaps. Couldn't afford to buy a '70 GT500 convertible they were selling for $1500 at the same time.
Gotta love them good old days
Bob

Bob,
The heartburn from Royal Castle hamburgs lives on. And the taste of "birch beer" the special Royal Castle rendition of root beer! What a great taste!

That's right Dan, I'd forgotten Birch beer. It was the only root beer I liked.
Thanks
Bob

I remember the be home by the street light warning, drinking from the garden hose, waiting for summer so you could play in the street more because the days were longer and there was no homework to do (and I am sure my folks were glad to have me out of the house burning off energy). My Dad sending me to the gas station for lawn mower gas with a metal one gallon can and some change from his pocket. Ice cream cones from my Grandma because she put M&M's in the bottom of the cone first, and of course what childhood is complete without a good tree fort. Ours was built in a huge pine tree in our yard, always came out of the tree covered in pitch and then went right for the dog to see how much hair we could get to stick to us. Suprised that my Mom didn't kill me and my dog wasn't bald.

Cal Metal asked for "Automotive" related stories but..hey..who cares. The thread has taken on a life of its own.
Bought a '58 Corvette in '66. Piece of junk--great learning tool, as I was about to find out in the ensuing two years of ownership.
Paid $1,200 for it. A guy who worked for my Dad had a mint, absolutely flawless '62 Corvette that he was selling for $2,000. Never even approached Dad on that one. It seemed like a million dollar difference back then. One can see why the Cobra was no barn burner seller at the Ford dealerships, either. At close to $6,000, that made the car ineligible for probably 95% of the working public. If they had that kind of $$$ to spend, it would have been on a Lincoln.

That car got most of its mileage behind a tow truck. Spend all my DX gas station part time job $$$ on that car. Motor, trans, just for starters. Engine was rebuilt.......yeah right......after burning oil like an industrial furnace for a year, we finally pulled it down.
The pistons had been knurlized--a concept that may escape the younger crowd on this forum-- The taper on the cylinder walls resembled the shape of a diamond. Some of the ring lands on the piston had the ring broken in ten different areas (per land!!) To top it off, they had used chrome rings which wouldn't conform to any taper. A veritable bust...............
Transmission had a bad cluster. Fortunately for 'ole Cal, he had a friend who was a mechanical genius of sorts and taught me everything I know (that isn't saying much) and we were able to do it ALL for under $200.00 (motor and trans). Thanks God for that.
So, Dan, regarding the car being a chick magnet, it had the portential; unfortunaely, my head was either under the hood or looking the Chevy parts guy in the eye, doliing out dollar after dollar to keep it going. Great idea, just a bad car................

How about the "promo cars" that dealers used to give to prospective buyers and their children. I remember back in the early 80's when I purchased a car from one of our local dealers and when the car was delivered there were roses in the car for my wife and a signature jacket for me. I was told later that this was the salesman's choice and a wise one it was because over the course of two years I sent him 8 new customers and I personally purchased 2 more vehicles from him.

Everyone remembers "Hey Little Cobra" by the Rip Cords but does anyone remember who wrote the song and why?

Dan,
I wish I could have said that I had the information in the gray matter between my ears, but all that I could remember was that some woman wrote the song after she bought a Cobra.
(Quick internet search returns the following from: http://www.thecarsource.com/shelby/c...tle_cobra.html)
""Hey, Little Cobra" was written by Carol Conner in 1964. She apparently wrote "Hey, Little Cobra after she'd gone to Shelby American and purchased her very own Little Cobra. Her biggest hit was "To Know Him is to Love Him" selling 2 million copies."

You're BOTH correct. She was a singer in the group "Teddy Bears" and sang "To know him is to love him". I believe she was one of the first women to purchase a cobra in an automatic.
