i respect everyones opinion and choice about which engine they choose to fit under the bonnet, im a bit of a purist and think that a cobra shoud have a ford engine, especially a tough one, thats the way they came, but to each his own. tomcat

It's a bit much to call it pure when the Cobra never cam fitted with a 351 Windsor based motor. The only pure motor for your body shape is a 427 or 428 Ford FE motor. The 351 Windsor bears about as much relation in design to that motor as my LS1 does. The only thing common between to two is the name on the rocker covers.
We all respect your choice too but this whole Ford Vs Chev argument is getting a bit lame.
I know at my first track outing at Shelbyfest there was more than half the field behind my tock LS1 but there were still plenty of Fords and a few chevs in front of me.
It's probably no really fare to compare the HSV boys with yourself at the drags. Stick 600-700KG in your passengers seat and you would probably be on par for power to weight.
Cheers

Hopefully at next years Shelbyfest there will be a few less of both in front of me.

just f & c
no one has even mentioned the L word . or is it just an accepted fact that they are the best bang for buck going.
all alloy 4 cams 4 valves per cyl 6 bolt mains huge oil system
and cheap. though i must admit to fully rebuild one is not any cheaper than a chev or ford .
but that defeats the the whole idea of a cheap race engine.
if it blows it goes and in goes a new one.

so you reckon my old school carby fed 351 windsor stroker is about as close to the original as your late model fuel injected computerised coil on leads with knock sensors etc etc etc . go figure tomcat

Nope, I'm saying if it's not a 427 or 428 FE in this body shape then it's not pure.
A windsor was used in the CSX2xxx serias cars and they are leaf sprung with quite a different shape.
That being said the 351 Windsor wasn't even developed till the Cobra had long finished production. I think they didn't come out till 1969 or so. It might share the same name as the 289 but the only thing that's probably interchangable between the two is the heads.
Cheers

Don't forget if Shelby's original plan had worked out we might all be on www.ClubScaligettiCorvette right now rather than Club Cobra.

By the way, who else agrees with me that this is a seriously sexy car.

build Manual
HI Andrew
I have the CR build manual if you need it, I will post it to you. On second thought I will deliver it in person it is really heavy postage would be a fortune.
Yep, I would have that in my garage.

Does anyone have an RMC build manual?
Tom - my cars not finished, and I think drag racing is for those that like to get things over and done with just a little too prematurely for my liking - but each to their own.

Puss cat, yes it was a compliment.
Good to see that even though QLD may not have daylight saving they are up to date in other matters.
Lighten up a tad mate.
Andrew it is not premature, it is effective time management.

No need to take everything so seriously Tomcat. 11 seconds is seriously quick.
At the end of the day your car is a kit car and so is mine. They were not made by Ford or $helby. 95% of the population probably don't know what the car is, never mind what is under the bonnet!
As you have already noted, fast times at the drag strip or circuit tend to come after plenty of practice and good setup. I hope that a few more of the Chevy guys get out and sort their cars for good times in the future.
I would be happy with 12's for my stock LS1 when I get a chance to race.

hey gav, thanks for the compliment, at first i took it the wrong way , because i always thought the saying was, its not to be sneezed at', not , its nothing to sneeze at. which to my way of thinking was the opposite. then i thought s**t he must have a preeetty fast cobra if he thinks mid 11s is ordinary. tomcat

Nothing wrong with mid 11's Tom.
I wish I could get there, my chevy powered slug is a long way off that sort of times, I will blame tyres and driver.

tyres and setup 383 cid
hi allfie, on the street with my old engine [ flat tappert cam ] i use 295/50/15 radials, 26inches tall. pulled an 11.8 116mph revving to about 7000 or more with plenty of tyre spin off the line if youre not careful, same engine with solid roller revving to only 6000 rpm, i fitted a worn set of mickey thompsons et street grooved slicks 28 inches x 12.5 wide on 15s running about 14psi. they just launch you without any tyre spin , unless you load the revs right up. i dont even bother with a warmup burnout. 11.5 118mph short changing 2nd to 3rd, not using tacho. the 121mph came from holding it longer in 2nd.car setup is race built c4 auto 3 speed fully manualised with hurst shifter, jag rear end 3.66 ratio clifford locker.carby is a barry grant 850, my 60ft times arent that good because i use a edelbrock super victer intake which are not good for making torque down low, a performer manifold would be better. i wanted engine longevity and it makes all its power by 6000rpm [old engine 7200rpm] oh its spinning a cleveland crank in a windsor block with a nicely ported set of victor junior heads. it really is a very mild cam and is impeccable on the street and beautiful to drive. regards tomcat
