The problem is when the car comes back to me. What happens with the tax? I also have to worry about an inspection sticker.

Another thing to be sure of if you sell the car to your parents and they register it in Florida, will your state accept the Florida registration. Some states won't accept another states registration on these cars. I know for a fact that California won't. Buy a car here that is registered in another state and you have to go through the same BS to get one on the SB-100 numbers that you would have to if you had built it here.

Your parents (or you on their behalf) will have to pay any fees and taxes in FL and then you'll have to pay any fees and taxes when it comes back to MA.

One example on the need to check when considering out of state registrations. CT would not accept a legal, i.e., not a Title Company, registration and title on a transfer when it was recognized the vehicle was a kit car which was registered as a 1965. However, all the paperwork was in order for paying the sales tax.

I live in California and recently purchased an RUCC car from Texas. Prior to the purchase I contacted the CA DMV Technical Services division and gave them the facts about the car; kit car completed in 2004, titled and registered in Texas as a 1966 AC Cobra, engine details and no emission equipment whatsoever, etc.. The response was they consider it a 1966 and there will be no problem titling and registering it as such and no emission equipment or testing is required.
My visit to the DMV today was uneventful and the car is now titled and registered in California as a 1966 AC Cobra. I suppose the fact it was previously titled and registered as a 1966 in Texas had some bearing on their decision or maybe I just got lucky.

Well I did get it registered. I brought it to the state police and showed them all the receipts and they allowed it to get registered. So I have been driving it for a little over a month. I still need an inspection sticker. I have to wait until April fr that. So I risk getting a ticket for no sticker everytime I drive

Uhh, can't you just peel an inspection sticker off of one of your other cars and paste it on your Cobra? |

I would just cary all your paper work with you (showing the paper work was in process) in case you get pulled over.
I personally never got a ticket when I was driving my Cobra, although I did get pulled over a few times going too fast or while laying down a couple of black tire marks. A little humility on my part and giving the Cop respect would end in at most, being told to "take it easy out there" but most of the time they just wanted to talk about the car. |
