				 stroker dyno results
I am looking to build a 500+ hp stroker motor, and could use some advice. Anyone got proven dyno results from their combo? AFR has some on their site, but not much else out there. I don't care if it has marginal street manners. Anyone taken apart their stroker and found that the 347 has done bore damage? Will the pre 74 302 2 bolt block hold together? Trying to sell my Boss 302 motor to fund this, can't justify much more $ in vehicles. Could sell the 69 boss crank and get a scat stroker. Thinking aluminum AFR heads though. Perhaps keep the boss and stroke it? Its too heavy I think.. Goals are more horsepower and torque, and lose some weight. |

 FIA,
I bought a cobra that has a 396 small block. It was an exact duplicate of another engine that dyno'd out at just over500/500.
 Build spec's:

 Scat crank
 Hbeam rods
 10.5-1 pistons
 Victor heads
 750 holley
 solid cam

I am not sure the piston spec's are right as I have compression ckecks at each cylinder of 285lbs.

 Hope this helps.

P.S.: she lopes at low rpm but will but will pin your a$$ to the crack up to 6500 rpm. Haven't run it yet so don't have 1/4 times. To scary for me.

I can email you a word.doc that has all my specs but basically the dyno results (corrected) were:
 383hp @ 5750rpm
 414ft-lbs torque @ 4000rpm

The figures are relatively low due to the induction. I have an old Ford tri-power setup. A similiar engine to mine, but with a Holley carb and Eldebrock Stealth manifold dyno-ed at 435hp.

A little head work and a more beefy cam should get you to 500hp.

No problems to date after 2 years.

 FIA#9,
I am not trying to tell you what to do, but I think if you are going for 500+ horsepower you would be better off to get a 351 and stroke it. Pushing a 302 out to that limit could bring about a short life span. Talk to Great ASP as he just built his motor some time ago and has a great one. I think the highest I have seen a 302 pushed to was about 440 horse and it did hold together and preformed great.

I agree with Ron. If you really want 500hp, a stroked 351W is the way to go. A 408W will get to 500hp/500ft/lbs without having to spin it over 6000 rpm. To get 500 hp out of a 347, your going to have to build a high rev motor. Stroker + high rev = boom.
If your wanting a Scat stroker kit, a great place to get it is Brian Adams (scatstroker@hotmail.com ) at AD Performance .

Mark, 285 lbs doesn't tell you anything about your compression, only good starting point for finding out if anything is wrong with your engine. Your cam controls how much static cylinder pressure you have.
To find CR you have to use your bore and stoke, plus deck height, plus head volume, minus dish cc's in piston, plus gasket compressed thickness divided by head cc's

				 351 stroker
 hotfingrs...
Crap, that is a load of info.. That will have to wait for a teardown!!
I bought the car and have had absolutely no problems with it to this point, so until it pops I will leave it be.
When the time comes for a teardown (rings, bearings and gaskets) I will sure use the info. and figure that out.
 Thanks, Mark

You can get 500 HP out of a 331 or 347 but at what cost to reliability? It's EASY to get that kind of power (and more) out of a 408, or 418........even a 393 with the right heads, cam and intake. Check out these guys and order a free catalog from them. Nice book, with all kinds of stroker kits, parts, long and short blocks, etc. Good reputation too. www.dssracing.com |

Thanks guys, gave me some things to think about. The DSS catalog came today, sent them an email. Had never considered the 351 stroker, but wanted a high winding motor like the real mccoys. Will continue to learn and agonize. There are some smart people on this forum. |

				 504 HP Stroker
Check out the May issue of Muscle Mustang & Fast Fords. David Vizard is building a 392 'crate motor package' for development. The first version idles smoothly at 650 rpm and 15 inches of vacuum and produced 504 hp with 514 lb/ft of torque. There is more to come as he tests other heads etc. but the camshaft software selections service he talks about sounds like a dream come true.
John
I think MM&FF is going to sell a lot of magazines over the next few months!

 FIA,
You may want to call Dave Adams in Cameron, Wisconsin. He's a straight shooter who builds race engines for a living. He's built several engines for different Cobras built by CC members Cal Metal and Jeff Karnitz. He will dyno the motor if you want and his prices are about as reasonable as they come--

 Good luck,
 Bob

i have a 10.1comp 347 with quad webers making 435fwhp,as much as webers tame the idle a bit its not something i would drive all the timefor 500plus hp i would definatly go 351 stroker

				 351W is way to go
I have 205 AFR heads on my 418.
.600 gross lift cam

556 max fwhp on pump gas, however I add octane boost to it to make sure. (10:5 to 1)

				 Stroker dyno results
I am under the imression that the 392-396 stroker is more reliable and cheaper to build than a 408 up?
Also with a 393 with 9.7.1 comp I wonder whether 500fwbhp is possible, the fuel in this country varies, I know guys with 9.5.1 on cast heads FE engines running strong street performance, so I hope to run AFR alloy heads which may allow me 10.1 comp! I can get avgas to dose it up when racing, so I could always retard slightly for the street and run 10.1.

Does anyone run a knock sensor of any type, I am not sure they are available!

Camshaft profile where is a good place to start with this, as a guy here who builds Fords for racing, he endorses Roller solid camshafts, he doesn't like hydraulic rollers, a lot of my engines have been flat tappet, but I would prefer to keep things simple for reliability.

As mentioned above, current issue of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords has a build article on a street 393 putting out 500+/500+ on pump gas. Very streetable cam.
Summit has tech section on a 393 buildup that's comparible.

				 10:5 to 1
 Ant,
My 418 is 10:5 to 1, and runs on pump gas. However, to keep away from any "knock knock", I run Klotz octane boost in my tank. 16 oz with 12 gallons and never a knock.

BTW, I have 205 AFR heads

66 snake--your motor seems like a perfect combination of power and driveability. Was it dynoed with your specific headers? Also, what size are they, and are they equal length, etc? I spoke with a local head porter and dyno man who strongly advises to stay away from radical strokes like 347. He had a 351 on the dyno last week and it made about 500hp, but he said the headers were too small and he figures to get to about 575-600 with tuning and 1 & 7/8 headers. Sounds like 351 is the way to go. Also, what block do you have? |

 FIA#9,
This motor was dyno'd with 1 3/4" headers but installed in the car with 2". Because it takes at least a 2" tube to clear the exhaust ports on the AFR 225 heads and headers are equal length tubes. As far as block goes, we used a Ford motorsports Sportsman II. Which to my understanding has a little heavier webbing on the bottom end.

It'll be interesting to see what rear-wheel hp I get with the larger headers, I hope they make up for the loss thru the mufflers.
