I wouldn't "out him" myself, there are so many like that he's just another in a long list so I don't see the point really.

...and it wasn't me, honest, I wasn't even there, didn't do it, no sir.

I advertised a motorcycle for sale on Craigslist, guy call's, emails, got all the details, never heard from again. Then a couple of days later I see HIS AD for the same model bike I selling. Now that got my goat, I gave up all my info to this guy so he could one up me!!!! Stinkers, the world is full of them.

Ernie,
You know me personally, I have no vendetta, it's just the time involved and of course the extra work. When you have things that need to be done, one doesn't need to be running around in circles!

Now I have done countless hours of foot work, answering e-mails, phone calls for legitimate buyers for years, AND will continue to do so. If the Well goes dry, the shingles all blew off in a storm OR the guy simply changed his mind! That's all part of the business, but to have someone, especially from this forum not even send a "sorry, I just can't afford it after all." Is NOT to much to ask.

That's it, my 2-cents worth.

WOW! Paul F., NICE comment! Only if I've had this car for 7 years, only if I took every nut and bolt off and went through the entire car myself, only if EVERY x-mas-birthday-fathers day went to getting parts for this car, only if I worked my ass off horse trading work for parts towards this car, only if ALL my buddies gave their free time to help me with this car WOULD I EVEN CARE about what happens to this car! I mean seriously did I inquire about your financial background? I didn't even make 7K last year with my Remodeling company, trust me I know what the economy is doing right now! I got my Cobra the only way I could, me busting my ass and building every aspect of it!

As for all the other comments, THANK YOU! I do appreciate the outgoing thoughts and suggestions! This is something I haven't really thought of doing and it kinda caught me off guard. I still haven't even enjoyed the car in the fall yet as the temps here are 90 + degrees! The thought of selling is enticing as I haven't had a couple of great years of business BUT once I'm out, I'm out! Here in Ga. I don't even think I could start over and get one titled again, they've stopped that process from what I hear. I do believe it's a good idea to have a number ready for a prospect and one that I'm at peace with. I gave him a number that was much higher and he responded with a 5K difference in a offer. Was mine too high, maybe. Was his too low, I felt so too. I offered a compromise in price, not again! I'm a little more hardened after this and will stay true to my thoughts on the car.

I do have a great car and one that I built entirely! It's been put together with a lot of pride in wanting to do it correct and right. I've enjoyed the build probably more than anything and after 5 years on this forum you guys have provided the BEST sources of information one could ever get! I Thank You for all the comments!

Even yours Paul F. See I can "Man Up"!

You know DV just wants to know who this guy in case he gets a call.

No doubt, DV, with you having been in business so many years dealing with customers, selling cars, you've had a belly full of tire kickers. Yup, if I was in your shoes I'd be making a list and THIS tire kicker would go right on it. HA HA HA

FIA,

I still don't understand what this post is about. You want to vent about a guy asking about your car. Are you really venting about a guy wasting your time or are you venting because you have to sell your car due to personal reasons?

Time wasting is just a part of selling a car. Get over it. But if you are struggling with keeping what to most of us is a prized possession, this I understand.

It's all part of selling a car. If you don't want to play the game, consign it somewhere and pay them to deal with it.

I hear ya. I recently sold my Cobra in this Atlanta marketplace. Actually posted the car on Craigslist to see what kind of response I might get. Got one complete tire-kicker who obviously just wanted to drive a Cobra, but sold the car to the first "real" guy that was interested. If you really want to sell, advertise it for a fair price and be patient. These cars are simply awesome and you will get a seller. My guy looked at five other Cobra's in the Atlanta Market before seeing mine, so there is obviously some competition out there. If your car is in good shape and priced accordingly, it will sell.
Just make sure you really want to sell it before you take the leap. I have to admit I've had some seller remorse since it left my garage.
Good luck....

Sellers remorse? OK, somebody top MY remorse story! I sold Excalibur for what I paid for it, broke even. Within two months I was going nuts, HAD to have the car back. It cost me $5,000 more than I sold it to the guy for, he didn't want to sell, I insisted. I brought a paper sack full of $100 bills and just kept counting them out on his kitchen table until he folded.

Now here's the sweet part, some years later I sold the Excal again, made a $7,000 profit on the re-sale, ABOVE the $5,000 I had to pay to get the car back the second time.

Well, that was then, this is now, back then the Cobra market was HOT, HOT, HOT! It's cooled considerably these days, be glad if you can break even now. These cars really carried an investment potential at one time.

Well PatrickT your Columbo skills are pretty good. Better go play the lotto tonight if your a betting man!

Paul, I understand your views and I was just trying to blow some steam here more or less. I'm frustrated in the fact that I spent too much time towards an idea that I really wasn't probably ready to do. I was right in the middle of summer baseball everyday and night. We were trying to get ready for the World Series and I should have just told him it can wait but I thought there was an opportunity. Lesson learned again, family and home first. I had resorted to selling and now I feel guilty for wanting to keep it. I don't have to sell but that's a large sum to start college funds, wife's projects, etc. I do have my 66 Mustang Fastback I've had for 19 years to fall back on.

I would expect this if and when I do list the car for sale. Given the current market, I was at peace with what I countered with. Hell, I was going to even deliver it for him if it came down to it. But if I approached someone about buying a car, I'm the kinda guy that will make sure I'm not wasting the "other guys" time. I don't know if he was really serious but any kind of answer would have been nice. I'm going on with my plans and put my finishing touches on it. My best friend sold his immaculate 66 Tiger and pretty much said here's the price, here's the pics, here's the info. take it or leave it. He didn't get worked up either way. I don't want to bash the guy but I just think some kind of response was in order. Either way I'm right back where I was before and I know what I got.

Thanks for the advice from everyone! Matt

Deal with it every day and have been for about 25 years. You have to figure out the serious guys from the tire kickers pretty quick or you will not have any time to work on stuff that pays the bills. This is why when in business yourself you have to work only 1/2a day you just have the decide which 12 hours that is.
I get guys wanting complete line by line quotes on an engine and then find out they will not buy for another year or two. I give them a rough quote and tell them that things will change by the time they are ready. We send hundreds of quotes out and this is not figured into any pricing. Part of the business but you do have to ask a lot of questions for sure.

Good Luck, Keith

In my experience, it can take a good 6 to 12 months to sell a used Cobra. Very few sell quickly since their is a glut of them on the market.

With the two Cobras that I have sold, I have treated each and every potential buyer with the same respect, regardless if the a**hole factor applied or not.

You never know when you will put the correct arse in the driver's seat.

I usually apply that to all my financial dealings in life.

But that's just me.

Here's a bit of a different view, guys!

Although I have been following the component car industry (and particularly the Cobras) since the early 1970's, I always had something keeping me from getting one. College, kids, a house, a divorce, you name it, it was always something. When I retired in December, 2007, I decided it was time. I found one on this website that I could afford, contacted the owner and found out that it was not sold yet, and traveled the 800 miles (round trip) to see the car. I liked it but wasn't ready to buy that day (the financing wasn't arranged yet), so I left without making an offer. I'm sure he thought I was a tire kicker.

30 days later I recontacted the seller and made an offer. We completed the deal within 2 weeks.

I mention this b/c you can never tell who is a tire-kicker and who isn't......any day now that guy who seemed to be just kicking tires could become the next owner of your car.

Cheers from Dugly

If some dork comes up to you and wants to buy the car, add $15'000.00 to what it's worth, come down $10'000. and say "Cash Only, Show Me the Money' and no trades".
If that doesn't work just keep the car and enjoy it.

Or....How to alienate a potential buyer so both you and he lose!

When the guy tried to buy my airplane even though it wasn't for sale, I treated him with respect and courtesy. I even pointed him towards other similiar airplanes for sale and I offered to help him qualify them if he wanted something for less money. In the end, he came back and bought mine for more than the cost of a cobra over retail. I all the way to the bank! I guess that made me feel better than showing him who was the boss.

Sorry Bill, I'm not busting your chops. You just never know when that dork has a bucket of money.
