Ok, just bought something to keep the block from splitting.....had to get it before I machine the block. Progress.....but slow progress.

The one I have is a little different as it touches all 5 main caps and then uses the oil pan bolts to help secure it as well. It's a full girdle and pretty much encapsulates the entire bottom end of the block. The oil pan bolts to it.

I normally don't really care much for girdles, but on an FE, where the block is skirted, I think it adds a great bit of strength.
