Are you sure there's no air in the line? I can't remember what slave cylinder you said you have, but I'm fairly certain that they have more than 1/2" travel. That's not much.

My Wilwood slave would totally collapse the dust boot on full travel.

I'm sure there wasn't any air in system before I changed master cylinder. Now that I've changed to the new 1" dia Tilton master cylinder, I'm sure that I do have air in system now, but it will have to wait. Over time the master cylinder will fill and run that air back up to the resivoir. I'll have to bleed the air at the slave cylinder later. I'm supposed to get the car out of the garage for now and start seting up for a canning sesion this weekend.

Mike ... for what it`s worth , I have a Tilton MC on my HTOB and had troublr getting all the air out . Tilton told me that because of their design , it was possible to have air trapped behind the piston at end of stroke . I took my spare apart , won`t go into the details , but they were right . They recommended tilting the MC/ rear bleeder , up at about a 30 degree angle . When I did that , about 3 to 4 good size air bubbles came out ( used a pressure bleeder ) ... then I had a good pedal . Had to take the MC off the mounting bracket and rig something up to do this , but it worked .

My plan is, when I get my garage back, to remove the slave cylinder . I kinda expect to find a bunch of trash in the slave cylinder. I'm starting to think that what I thought was the clutch wearing causing loss of free travel, may have been the slave cylinder not returning to it's absolute bottom. A lot of stuff has happened and I'm less sure than ever about what is going on. I'll know more once I get the car back into the garage.

Default Brent, You're the Man!

Brent,

I don't know squat about clutches. After reading this thread, I can assure you that I will call you to get the clutch, tranny, and bellhousing combination for my Cobra when I get to that stage. I've not seen such experience and advice clearly and freely given anywhere. You've certianly earned whatever meager business I can give you.

Thank you sir.

I try to help as much as I can. I've been a member of Club Cobra for YEARS and I've received a large quantity of good advice and help from other members. Just trying to return the favor.

To whom ever might be interested. When questions came up about my clutch replacement I turned to Brent for his advise. There wasn't much to it...I mailed him a check and he had the parts I needed shipped to my mechanic's shop. Took about a week. He answered emails promptly, at all hours not just business hours. He answers his cell phone and followed through with everything he promised. If price is your main concern his were just slightly below the big suppliers. A stand up guy in my book.

I removerd the old slave cylinder and had it checked by a specialist. He pronounced it trash. He said it would have to be honed so far that oversized parts would be needed.
I now have a new slave cylinder. New slave cylinder is already covered in a bright plating and has thicker mounting ears. It has a 1" bore and 1 1/2" travel. It is a direct replacement for my original slave cylinder. The shop said they use this cylinder on a whole lot of vehicles including IH trucks. $39 . The new rubber boot, has a smaller hole for push rod. I made some arrangements on my push rod to capture and locate the end of the boot and seal it off, everything worked great.

Bleeding turned out not that hard and things started working. I all most put the wrong fluid in the resivoir though. 90W isn't a suitable replacement for silicone brake fluid, is it?
After all this I think it was the slave cylinder all along, not returning to it's bottom. The clutch disc wasn't actually wearing that fast. The clutch shop said my old 11" disc was .040" thinner than original and the presure plate spring tension had fallen from 2100 to 1200 LBS. @ .300" . So all in all, most of the stuff was due for replacment. I never figured that the spring tension would fall off that much without a lot of heat. So now I have a new slave cylinder, master cylinder, 12" clutch disc, and a resprung pressure plate, and thow-out bearing. Maybe all this will save someone else a little time and money.
