Cruising last night, just about everybody we saw smiled and waved. Come to think of it, none of them paid attention to me. Our daughter was smiling, chatting and waving to everyone she saw. I couldn't hear a word she said with her little voice, but she was sure having a good time.

Two weeks ago, my very first ride after installing the drivetrain in my new Backdraft, I was flattered by being chased down by a Vette at 11:30 pm (we finished late). He actually pulled a U-turn after passing me in the other direction on a two lane back road. He followed me down to the main highway and proceeded to try to get me to play. I would have loved to play, but I only had three miles of break in and five minutes of driving experience in my new car. The other cool thing was setting off my first car alarm as I entered my neighborhood. Not bad for a first ride!

Just last night as I come out of the local wing joint approaching the car there was an attractive women standing staring at the car talking on her cell phone. As I am slipping my carry out into the passenger side foot box I hear her say to the person on the phone "I am standing outside of BW3 staring at the most beautiful machine I have ever seen"! To bad I was expected home

Every time I pass some 5th grade aged kids that are playing in their yard, they always give the same symbol...the "Illegal Procedure/False Start" hand signal. I have to assume that means "light 'em up!" So I always do...very briefly. Just a quick twitch of the right ankle usually sends a deafening roar and gets the butt to kick out 15-20 degrees...just 'nuff to notice.

And nearly without failure, the kids always slap each other high-fives.

Took the Cobra to the Ford show at Knott's Sunday. About 25 Cobras there; 4 or 5 originals, a Brock/Superformance Coupe, an Upstates Coupe; and the rest replicas. There was a nice ERA there with an aluminium-headed 427 SOHC!!

Also a 427 Comp car, with documented racing history. It won its' class at Sebring back in the 60's. The man says its worth $550,000.

But the biggest crowd was around Lynn Park's 289 Cobra, dubbed "Dirtbag". Pale oxidized yellow paint, obvious repaint on some body sections, dents, loads of rock chips, etc. Worn and torn upholstery, faded carpets, and a rusty/dusty/musty engine compartment. (Car is mechanically "gone thru", to be reliable for the amount of driving Lynn does in this car.) This car was in someone's backyard for 25 years. Lynn calls this car "Barn-fresh!!"

Had a lot of people posing for pictures in front of our Cobras. The weather was nice and warm, and it was a great day for a car show.

This past weekend I was out getting to know my SPF a little. When I pulled up to a stop light first only to have a last 60's model Big Block Convertible Vette pull up next to me. I have to say a beautiful car, it's off-road exhaust was a little "tamer" than mine but sounded good all the same. The driver asked the usual, it that an original? I said nope...then he said he'd trade me even up....again I said nope...I told him how much I liked his ride and asked if he'd like to run'em 100ft of so....He said NO F'n way, he could hear me ahead of him 1/4 mile back......

Saturday morning a few of us in the club were heading to breakfast.

We are approaching the big soccer field area ( actually about 6 fields) where there are always police to direct traffic due to the amount of folks who frequent the fields.

The police have to stop traffic in one direction ( the opposite direction from ours), so we were sailing on by.

As I approach the officer directing traffic, he is facing me, directing traffic with his right arm.

As I am almost on him I notice his left arm is slightly outstretched with a big thumbs up (right arm still directing traffic).

After I waived and went by, I couldn't stop laughing and had a nice sense of community from his gesture.

It was a nice way to start off a Cobra ride and the weekend!

Red face

Friday the 16th watching three Gasholes lay on the ground laughing and saying, "You call that a Cobra." It may be a small block but at least it runs on all four barells of the carb.

Cruised by the local elementary school on the way to the freeway. (No, guys, its NOT what you're thinking!) Half a dozen kindergartners came running up to the fence, yelling and pointing at my car, and I could hear them saying: "Cool car!" and "WOW!, a RACE car!" Even the "hottie" teacher was smiling at me! (OK, OK, she was smiling at the COBRA!!!) You guys!!!!!!!!

I was on base yesterday in my car and as I was headed out for lunch a formation of Airmen were marching to the Dining Hall (we have an Training command detachment here and yes Air Force folks do march on occasion oh and note I said dining hall not chow hall!). As I rolled up to them, they all smiled and waved in unison. Uncommanded, they all waved simultaneously! It was almost as if the Flt Commander said "Ready....Wave!" Even gave me an "Eye's Right" and watched me roll past!

That was probably one of the best recognitions I could have recd with this car yet!

Had my Cobra at the Knott's Show this weekend, nestled between the Superformance display, and the Trigo Wheels display. (Hey Dean, the Red Barchetta!) I posted a sign on the windshield, stating "POLISHED TRIGO WHEELS". It was interesting to see people check out the Cobra, notice the sign on the windshield, and I could see the people step back, nod their heads in acknowledging the freshly-polished wheels, and smiling as they walked away.

There must have been over 100 Cobras at the show, and another 50 or so Porsche Speedster kits there, along with the other various kit-makers, from the VW Bug/'30s roadster combo, to the '40 Ford body repanel on the Chevy S-10 frame and interior.

Also there were a couple of home-made vehicles that looked like land-bound jet planes. One of them had a mid-engined Caddy Northstar V8 powering the rear wheels. Bad thing was, it was a one-seater!!

Hi Edley,

Talking about recognition.

Did the boys from Roarin 40's show up or did they get side tracked at that bar.

Sounds like you enjoyed the Knotts.

Cheers

Came up next to a Ford Lightning truck, as we prepared to get into the left turn lane to get onto the freeway on-ramp. We get to the red light at the beginning of the on-ramp, Lightning #1, "Pookie" ( my Cobra) #2. The light turns green, and the Lightning goes up the on-ramp like a normal adult driver does. Oh well, thought there would have been a "contest", but no.

Now I am looking for one of them Dodge "Rumble Bee" trucks. Or even one of them "V" Caddys!

Pulling out of a gas station with my daughter (who won't let me drive it wthout her anymore) and a Jeep GC is pulling out of another driveway a few yards away. We both pull out the same time but I stayed onthe road as the Jeep driver forgot to straighten out the wheel and promply drove up over the curb.

Recently on a Saturday, I was cruising down a country road and saw a Viper in my mirror, same color/stripes as mine. We came thru a bend which opened up into a long straight. I knew what was coming next so I nailed mine and never gave him a chance to get by me. About 2 miles up the road I pulled into a quickie mart and sure enough he pulled in behind me. He asked me what size big block I was running and I informed him I had a small block. He gave me the most pi$$ed off look I have ever seen and took off like a rocket. I thought it was pretty cool. Even as we talked, some of the local guys were crowding around my car and didn't even look at the Viper!!

Took the Cobra to a local "Bob's Big Boy" Friday nite cruise/park. Was looking at the 50 or 60 cars that were in the parking lot. A young woman cruised up in her Ford Escort rent-a-car, looking to park so she could go to the Starbucks for a iced coffee/latte/frothy/something or another.
The lot was full, and she had some problems navigating thru the lot. I saw there was room for her to pass safely, and waved her forward. She told me about her predicament, and about the bad day she was having, and asked me to sit in her car while she went in for her iced whatever. I said "Sure."
A parking spot opened up, right next to my Cobra, so I pulled the Escort into the spot. She came out a few minutes later with her coffee drink, and she noticed me leaning on my Cobra. She complimented me on "Such a nice car", and I told her I would give her a ride, just to take her mind off her terrible day.
She declined for the moment, but she told me her name, and we had a nice little conversation. Cobras. Nice icebreakers.

Well,
The best feeling that I've had building and owning this Cobra is when I decided to get it painted. A friend of mine suggested I contract Denny Trask Coachworks here in Upstate N.Y.. Denny is a very sought after body man. He does work on all of the high dollar luxury and exotic around here and around the world. This guy has done cars for the Ferrari Museum in Italy! I had told my friend that I could not possibly afford to have the work done by Denny and that his schedule was probably very, very busy anyway. I started looking around at other painters and got some estimates over the next few weeks. My friend stopped over one day and said he had talked directly with Denny and that when he found out it was a Cobra said he would make room in his schedule and give me some help with the cost of the work. It is still seemed expensive, but he was very good at what he does and it was a hoot to hear that because it was a Cobra he would make the time. So he is doing the work as I speak. Can't wait to see how she turns out.

Took my Cobra to the "Cruisin' Tunes Car Show" Saturday at Canoga Park High School in the San Fernando valley of Los Angeles. We parked in the parking lot adjacent to the "show", as I had an appointment for early in the afternoon.
The "Cruisin" part you all understand, typical car show entrants. The "Tunes" part was a little less plausible: crappy 50's and 60's music, played too loud, over crappy speakers, played by a balding, overweight ex-hippie with a mullet/ponytail, doing a bad Casey Kasem impression as he rattled off the usual 50/50 proceeds, who the show was for, etc etc etc.
Anyhoo, the Cobra attracted quite a few bystanders as we rumbled into the parking lot, and there was always a few people standing around the Cobra, admiring its' classic lines and beautiful curves, as it sat there ticking the heat from its headers and sidepipes.
There was this one hottie teenager chick, (rivalling UncleTodd's Sweetness!), all short-shorts and clingy tank top, videotaping the cars and trucks at the show, and I saw her come over to the Cobra, video-cam whirring in her hands.
She kept saying "This is a COOL car! This is a COOL car!" I told her if she showed me how the videocam worked, I would video her sitting in the Cobra. She stopped taping, looked at me with a BIG smile, and said "Sure!" So she hopped in, and one of her girlfriends hopped into the passenger seat, me and the videocam whirring away. (I didnt even KNOW I could whirr!)
Now the hottie was saying "This "This car is SO Cool! This car is SO COOL!" "This car is WAY COOLER than my car!" I asked her what car she drove, and she pointed out a clean '68 Camaro convertible that her dad had just finished restoring, and was letting his daughter drive it to the show for the first time. (I was glad it wasnt a ricer!) I told her that her Camaro was still a nice car, but she kept on saying that my Cobra was "WAY COOLER than her Camaro"!
A short while later, as I was pulling out of the parking lot to leave, she was right there with the videocam, taping all the sound and fury as I rumbled away that hot Saturday afternoon!. Yeah, I think she gets it.
